Which Coat Length Flatters You, by Height and Body Shape

The coat length that flatters you is decided by two things: where the hem falls against your leg, and where the coat’s waist sits against your body. Height matters less than most guides claim. A 5’2” woman can wear a long coat if the waist is marked high and the hem clears the ankle; a 5’10” woman can wear a short coat if it ends above the knee with intention. The four hem lengths and what each one does

Above the knee shows the whole leg, reads youngest, and works over pants and a slim skirt rather than a dress. Where the waist sits matters more than the hem

Every body has a natural waist, the narrowest point of the torso, usually an inch or two above the navel. A coat that marks it, with a belt or a fitted seam, tells the eye where the top half ends and the legs begin. A coat that marks nothing lets the eye decide, and the eye usually chooses the widest point.

A belt does three things: it sets the waist where you want it, it lets one coat fit over a dress on Monday and a suit on Tuesday, and it can be moved. A tie belt knots an inch higher or lower; a buckle belt holds one line. A flared skirt does the opposite job below the belt, creating space over the hip and thigh so the cloth skims rather than pulls. Petite: mark the waist, keep leg visible

At 5’4” or under, leave leg visible below the hem and mark the waist at your natural waist or slightly above. Knee length is easiest. Midi works when the belt sits high and the skirt flares. A long coat is possible when the hem stops at the ankle, not on the shoe, and the color runs unbroken from collar to hem.

Tall: carry the length, keep the shoulder sharp

At 5’8” and above you can wear every length here, and the long ones look intended rather than borrowed. Guard the shoulder: a coat that collapses there turns length into volume. Long torso and short legs: raise the belt

If your torso is long relative to your legs, a coat belted at the true natural waist can still look low, because the eye reads the belt as the top of the leg. Move it. A tie belt, on the Nicole in herringbone gray, the Kim, or the Rea, knots an inch above the natural waist without pulling. Keep the hem at the knee or midi so there is leg to see, and wear a shoe close in tone to your pants.

Broad shoulders, larger bust, fuller midsection

Broad shoulders are balanced from below, not hidden from above. A skirt that flares from the waist, as on the Nicole and the Lucy, gives the hip the same width as the shoulder, and the figure reads as an hourglass. Avoid a straight hem at the thigh, which leaves the shoulder as the widest line.

A larger bust needs ease over the bust and the waist marked below it. Wrap and belted coats adjust to the body, so the Nicole is the first choice and the Selina coat, double-breasted with a tie belt, the second. A fitted coat like the Lucy is beautiful on a larger bust when the size is right: four to six inches of ease at the bust, and the larger size if you are between two.

A fuller midsection, after a baby or after 50, is the reason the Paula and the cape exist. The blazer underneath and the sleeve

A winter coat lives over a blazer or a knit. Measure your bust at the fullest point, add four to six inches, and compare that with the size chart on the product page. The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, the back should not pull when the coat is closed over a jacket, and the sleeve should cover the wrist bone and clear the blazer cuff. If it fits everywhere except the sleeve, alter the sleeve. If it pulls at the shoulder, change the size; a shoulder cannot be fixed.
