What to Wear Over a Formal Dress in Winter: Coats That Cover the Dress
What to wear over a formal dress in winter comes down to length and fullness. The coat has to be at least as long as the dress, and its skirt has to be full enough to close over the skirt of the dress. A coat shorter than the dress leaves a band of dress showing, which looks right only when it is meant. A coat that is straight through the hip will not close over a full skirt at all.
We measured every Luna coat from the back of the neck to the hem on a size 2. Then we set the numbers next to our dresses. On the same size 2, our dresses measure about 34 inches above the knee and 37 to 41 at the knee. Midi dresses measure 46, and gowns measure 55 to 58. Our guide to what to wear over an evening gown covers capes, stoles and necklines for the gown itself.

Every Luna coat, measured against the dress underneath
A Luna coat covers a formal dress when the coat is at least as long as the dress. Our shortest coat, the Iris short tailored coat, measures 36 inches on a size 2. Our longest, the Isidora, measures 51. The table lists every coat, longest first, with the dress it closes over. Our guide to winter coat trends for 2026 to 2027 explains the shapes.

A coat can be long enough and still not close over a full skirt. Of our wool coats, only the Nicole and the Lucy flare from the waist. The Nicole in black is the coat we would buy first for a winter of formal dresses. It is long fiber wool at 480 grams per square meter, double breasted, with a buckled belt and a full Bemberg lining. Its skirt opens wide below the belt and ends at mid calf.

Which coats close over a full skirt
A coat closes over a full skirted dress only when its own skirt flares as wide as the dress. In the Luna collection, that means the Nicole and the Lucy. The Nicole in herringbone gray is the same coat as the black Nicole, in light gray and charcoal herringbone wool with a tie belt. At 46 inches it ends where a midi dress ends. A full midi disappears under it until you open the coat.

Straight coats such as the Selina in red, the Rea and the Isidora are cut for a sheath or a pencil skirt. Over a full skirt, their fronts pull open below the waist. Keep them for slim dresses.
What to wear with a cocktail dress when it is cold
With a knee length cocktail dress in the cold, wear a coat at least as long as the dress. Our knee length dresses measure 37 to 41 inches on a size 2, so a 42 inch coat covers every one of them. The Jody lace cocktail dress in black measures 39 inches. The Lucy in black measures 40, so it covers the Jody with 1 inch to spare. Its full skirt sits over the dress without pressing the lace. The Lucy is long fiber wool at 460 grams per square meter, fitted through the waist. Its detachable faux fur collar closes with a pompom on fine chains.

A cocktail evening in winter usually means a short walk and a long night indoors. On that walk a warm collar does more for you than a long hem, and the Lucy collar does the work of a scarf.
The faux fur collar, over a bare neckline
A faux fur collar suits an off shoulder, strapless or low V dress. It covers the skin that a plain collar leaves open to the wind. Five Luna coats carry one. The Paula pairs a large faux fur shawl collar with faux fur cuffs. Its black textured cloth has an astrakhan look, and a single button closes it. The Paula ends at the knee, 42 inches on a size 2, which leaves about 3 inches to spare over the Jody. The cloth is a textured viscose rather than wool, and the coat is fully lined.

The cape, for a short dress or a dress you want seen
A cape is an outer layer without set in sleeves that hangs from the shoulders. It suits a formal dress whose skirt you want people to see. The Selina cape is black long fiber wool with a black faux fur collar tipped in gray. A tie belt closes it at the waist, and it has openings for the arms. In our photographs it ends at the hip. Over any dress, the skirt shows below it from the hip down, and over a midi or a gown that is most of the dress.

The cape also goes on over a structured shoulder or a full sleeve without crushing either, which a fitted coat cannot do.
The coat that goes over a blazer and a dress
For a black tie optional dinner where you wear a blazer over the dress, choose a coat cut to go over a blazer. The Nicole is the one, and our catalog shows the black Nicole with a tailored blazer underneath. The Lucy in black has a shoulder cut for a blazer too. Choose the coat size for the blazer, not for the dress.
A light jacquard coat for a heated venue
For a heated venue and a short walk from the car, a light jacquard coat is enough. The metallic jacquard reads as evening wear. The Emma light coat in silver floral jacquard is woven with metallic threads, 90% polyester and 10% metalized fibers. Silver and ivory flowers sit on a black ground. It has a shirt collar, a concealed front and a tie belt, and it ends at the knee, 42 inches on a size 2. It covers a knee length cocktail dress. Over a midi, about 4 inches of the dress shows.

We would not choose the Emma for outdoor photographs in January. It is the coat for the walk between the car and the door, and for a dinner where the coat goes to the coat check and stays there.
A floor length gown, and the coat that is meant to show it
No Luna coat covers a floor length gown. Our longest coat measures 51 inches on a size 2, and our gowns measure 55 to 58. At least 4 inches of gown shows below any coat we make. So with a gown, choose a layer that is meant to show the dress. The Iris off shoulder maxi gown in navy measures 56 inches. Over it, the Lucy covers the bodice and the bare shoulders and leaves about 16 inches of metallic skirt in view. The full skirt of the Lucy sits over the gown without crushing it. The Selina cape does the same from the hip.
The wrap and the shawl
A wrap or a shawl keeps you warm enough over a formal dress only when the car waits at the door and the venue is heated. A wrap is a long rectangle of cloth worn around the shoulders. A shawl is usually a square folded into a triangle. Both leave the front of the dress open. In winter they belong inside, with a coat over them for the walk. The Selina cape works like a shawl with a collar and a belt.
Car to door, or outdoor photographs
Choose the coat by how long you will stand outside. For the walk between the car and the door, any coat in the table is enough, including the light Emma. For outdoor photographs at a winter wedding, choose wool. The photographs of a winter wedding are mostly taken outside, in the 10 minutes when every guest would rather be inside. The Nicole and the Lucy are the coats for those 10 minutes. Both are heavy wool with a full Bemberg lining, and both look finished in a photograph when they are closed.
For the dress itself, start with our guides to wedding guest dresses over 40 and wedding guest dresses for women in their 30s.
The color rule: a dark coat over a pale dress, a red coat over black
Over a pale or metallic dress, wear a dark coat. Over a black dress, a red coat works well. A dark coat frames a pale dress when it opens, and the dress looks lighter. A red coat over a black dress looks deliberate in a winter photograph, against snow or stone. The Lucy in red is the same coat as the black Lucy, in true red wool with a red faux fur collar. It measures 40 inches on a size 2 and comes in sizes 6, 8 and 10. Over the Jody lace dress in black, it covers the dress completely.

Frequently asked questions
What do you wear over a formal dress in the winter?
Over a formal dress in winter, wear a wool coat at least as long as the dress, with a skirt full enough to close over it. A cape that ends at the hip and lets the dress show also works. A knee length dress on a size 2 measures 37 to 41 inches, and the Nicole at 45 inches covers every one of them. The Lucy at 40 covers a dress up to 40 inches.
What do you wear with a cocktail dress when it is cold?
Wear a coat at least as long as the dress. A knee length cocktail dress measures 37 to 41 inches on a size 2. The Lucy coat in black covers the Jody lace cocktail dress with 1 inch to spare, and its faux fur collar warms a bare neckline. For a heated venue and a short walk, the Emma light coat in silver floral jacquard is enough.
What can I wear over an evening gown in winter?
No coat in our collection covers a floor length gown, so choose a layer that is meant to show the gown. Our longest coat measures 51 inches on a size 2, and our gowns measure 55 to 58. The Lucy coat covers the bodice of the Iris gown and leaves the lower skirt in view. The Selina cape does the same from the hip.
What do you wear over a black tie dress?
Over a black tie dress, wear a dark wool coat with a faux fur collar, or a cape. A black tie dress is usually a gown or a formal midi, so expect the hem to show below the coat. The Lucy in black, the Paula and the Selina cape all suit black tie.
How long should a coat be over a midi dress?
A coat over a midi dress should measure about 46 inches on a size 2, which is where our midi hems fall. The Nicole in herringbone gray measures 46 inches and the Nicole in black 45. Both have a full skirt that closes over a full midi. A shorter coat works over a full skirt, where the band of dress below it looks planned.
What color coat goes with a formal dress?
A dark coat goes with a pale or metallic formal dress, and a red coat goes with a black one. Black, navy and herringbone gray frame a light dress when the coat opens. The Lucy in red has a red faux fur collar, and it covers a knee length black dress such as the Jody lace cocktail dress.
Measure your dress from the back of the neck to the hem. Then find the coat in the table that is at least as long, with a skirt as full as the dress. Every Luna coat is dry clean only and made in our atelier in Pozarevac, where we have cut coats since 1990. Our winter coats and light coats ship free in the US. You have 30 days to return what does not work, so you can try the coat over the dress at home first.
