Winter Coat Trends 2026 to 2027 for Women: What Is Arriving and What Stays

Black wool coat with a black faux fur collar and a pom-pom tie, fitted at the waist with a flared skirt, worn in a snowy city square

The winter coat trends for 2026 to 2027 are the belted midi coat, the coat with a faux fur collar, the wool trench, the long textured coat, the short tailored coat and the cape, in red, ivory, mocha brown, herringbone gray and navy. Most of these shapes have been around for decades. In our fittings for winter 2026 to 2027, women choose a coat by length and cloth weight first and by color last.

This guide is for the woman with a December wedding and a commute that is colder than her coat. Our atelier in Pozarevac has cut coats since 1990. We measured every Luna coat below from the back of the neck to the hem, on a size 2, so you can check each length against your own body, and against the dress underneath, before you order.

The coat shapes for winter 2026 to 2027

Winter 2026 to 2027 has 6 coat shapes, and 2 of them are newer arrivals: the short tailored coat with a flounce and the long textured coat. The belted midi, the faux fur collar, the wool trench and the cape stayed. The shapes that stayed come first, since they are the ones women wear for 10 winters.

The belted midi coat, and what a wrap coat is

A wrap coat is a coat whose fronts cross over and close with a belt at the waist instead of a row of buttons. A belted midi coat keeps the belt and ends at mid calf. It is the shape we would buy first for a winter of mixed days. Our Nicole in black has the wrap coat’s wide collar, belted waist and flared skirt. We added a double breasted button front, so the wind cannot find a gap. It is long fiber wool at 480 grams per square meter and 45 inches long.

The Nicole in herringbone gray is the same coat in light gray and charcoal herringbone with a tie belt, at 46 inches. Herringbone reads softer than black in daylight, and it hides the lint a black coat collects on the train.

The coat with a faux fur collar

A faux fur collar is a collar of man made fur in place of animal fur, and Luna uses no animal fur on any coat. The Lucy in black runs from size 4 to 14. It has a fitted double breasted bodice, a full flared skirt and a detachable collar with a pompom on fine chains. Its long fiber wool weighs 460 grams per square meter, and at 40 inches the hem sits at the kneecap.

For red, we cut the Selina in 70% wool at 43 inches. Its red faux fur collar comes off. With the collar off, it is a red office coat.

The wool trench

A wool trench is a trench coat, with its storm flap, epaulettes and tie belt, cut in wool for cold instead of cotton for rain. The Clara in navy is 87% long fiber wool and 13% nylon at 420 grams per square meter. It is double breasted and belted, and we show it with a dark faux fur collar. At 50 inches it covers almost any skirt.

The Rea in cream jacquard and the Kim in pale beige are lighter trench coats for fall and spring. Neither is a coat for January in Chicago. Read wool coat vs. trench coat for where each one stops.

The long textured coat

A long textured coat ends at mid calf or below and gets its interest from the weave rather than a print. The Linea in ivory has a textured surface, a wide notch lapel, 3 buttons and a belt with a black buckle, at 48 inches. It is technical polyester, lighter than the wool coats, and it suits evenings in a mild city.

At 51 inches, the Isidora in mocha is our longest coat. It is a slim double breasted column in a wavy jacquard, and the mocha reads as warm taupe in daylight. With no belt and no flare, it sits best over a sheath dress or narrow pants.

The short tailored coat

A short tailored coat ends above the knee and is cut close through the body like a jacket. Our Iris in black has a wide collar, a full front zip, a buckled belt and a tiered flounce. At 36 inches it ends 3 to 4 inches above the kneecap. It also comes in cream beige and in chocolate brown with a floral jacquard flounce. It is a cotton blend coat for winters that are mostly a car, a lobby and a restaurant.

The cape

A cape is a coat without set in sleeves that falls from the shoulders, with openings for the arms. The Selina cape is black long fiber wool at 480 grams per square meter. Its faux fur collar is tipped in gray. It ends at the hip at 38 inches. Wear it over pants or a fitted dress, since it will not cover the skirt of a gown.

The colors rising for winter 2026 to 2027

The colors rising for winter 2026 to 2027 are red, ivory, mocha brown, herringbone gray and navy. Red is the coat a friend can find in a crowd outside a theater, in the Selina or the Lucy in red. Ivory, worn in the Linea, is for winter evenings, though we would leave it at home for someone else’s wedding. Mocha sits in the Isidora and the brown Iris, herringbone in the Nicole, and navy in the Clara.

Coat length by height and body shape, with measurements

The right coat length depends on 2 numbers. The first is the distance from the back of your neck to where you want the hem. The second is the length of what you wear underneath. Ask someone to measure you standing straight, from the bone at the base of your neck to the hem point. Then find that number in the table below.

Our model is 5 foot 9. She wears the 45 inch Nicole to mid calf and the 40 inch Lucy to the kneecap. A woman of 5 foot 3 will see every hem land lower on her leg. For her, a coat of about 40 inches gives the line the Nicole gives our model.

Body shape decides the cut more than the length does. A belted waist over a full skirt, as on the Nicole and the Lucy, draws in a straight figure and skims full hips. A long, narrow frame suits the slim Isidora, and a petite woman gets a defined waist from the Iris without any extra length. Our guide to the most flattering coats by body type goes further. Most of us own a coat that looked perfect in the fitting room and has looked perfect on its hanger ever since.

What to wear under a winter coat: a blazer, a midi dress or a full skirt

For a blazer underneath, we cut the Nicole, the Lucy, the Clara and the Linea with room in the shoulder. The sizing rule for a blazer underneath is in the questions below.

Over a midi dress, the coat has to be as long as the dress or longer. Our Rina midi dress in black measures 46 inches, so the 48 inch Linea covers it with 2 inches to spare. A knee length coat leaves the bottom of a midi skirt hanging below it, and that look is rarely on purpose.

A full skirt needs a coat with a full skirt of its own, and only the Nicole and the Lucy have one. They close over the volume instead of pressing it flat. Take the Nicole over a midi skirt and the Lucy over a knee length one.

Cloth weight and warmth in a winter coat

Cloth weight, measured in grams per square meter, is the number that decides how warm a winter coat is. For a city winter between 20 and 45°F, we recommend long fiber wool at 460 to 480 grams. In our range that means the Nicole, the Lucy or the Selina cape. The Clara at 420 grams suits 35 to 50°F. The cotton and jacquard coats are for fall and spring, and every Luna coat is dry clean only. Our guide to women’s wool winter coats by temperature covers each range.

Which of these trends will still look right in 2028

The coat trends that will still look right in 2028 are the classic shapes in classic colors. A belted midi in heavy wool, a wool trench and a coat in red or navy will all hold. We cut the Nicole and the Clara to be worn for 10 winters. On the Lucy and the Selina coat, the faux fur collar comes off in the years you do not want it.

The short tailored coat and the cape work as a second coat. For the case for owning 2 or 3 coats, read the art of winter coats.

Frequently asked questions

What are the winter coat trends for 2026 to 2027?

The winter coat trends for 2026 to 2027 are the belted midi coat, the faux fur collar, the wool trench, the long textured coat, the short tailored coat and the cape. The colors rising with them are red, ivory, mocha brown, herringbone gray and navy. A belted midi in heavy wool is the shape most likely to look right in 2028 too.

What length of winter coat should I buy?

Measure from the back of your neck to where you want the hem, and compare that number with the coat. Luna measures every coat on a size 2: the Iris is 36 inches, the Lucy 40, the Nicole 45 and the Clara trench 50. A coat should be as long as the dress under it, or longer.

Which coat goes over a midi dress?

A coat goes over a midi dress when its length matches or passes the dress. The Rina midi dress in black measures 46 inches. The 48 inch Linea in ivory covers it with 2 inches to spare, and the 46 inch Nicole in herringbone ends at the same height.

Is a wrap coat warm enough for winter?

A wrap coat is as warm as its cloth and its closure. A true wrap closes with a belt alone, and cold air gets in where the fronts part. The Nicole keeps the wrap lines and adds a double breasted button front in long fiber wool at 480 grams per square meter. It suits city winters between 20 and 45°F.

Can I wear a winter coat over a blazer?

You can, as long as the coat was cut to go over one. The Nicole, Lucy, Clara and Linea are cut to sit over a tailored blazer. Measure your bust at the fullest point, add 4 to 6 inches for the jacket, and compare with the size chart. Between sizes, take the larger one if you wear suiting most days. Returns are accepted within 30 days.

Start with the number. Measure from the back of your neck to the hem you want, find that length in the table, and then choose the color. The full range is in winter coats and light coats. Every coat is made in small runs in Pozarevac, and you have 30 days to return it.
