The Coat Over the Dress: Hem, Boot, and the Column
The coat and the dress should either end in clearly different places or the coat should run 1 to 3 inches longer, and they should never land in the same band. The cleanest pairing in the Luna collection is the Nicole Wool Wrap Coat in Solid Black at $825, a double-breasted, belted black midi coat that flares from the waist, over the Olga Wrap Dress in Navy at $695, a navy knee-length dress with a collar, short sleeves and a gold-tone belt buckle. The coat ends a hand below the dress, so the dress disappears into one dark column.
For a longer line, the Clara Wool Trench Coat in Navy Blue at $910 is a belted, double-breasted trench that reaches well below the knee. Browse every coat in winter coats and the matching dresses. Shipping within the United States is free and takes 2 to 5 days, and every order has 30-day returns with no questions asked.
December, a car door opening outside a hotel, and the coat and the dress arrive together for 4 seconds before the coat comes off. Those 4 seconds are the photograph. The coat and the dress were either decided together, or they were not.
The charts tell you the coat must be longer than the dress. That is 1 rule for 1 kind of day, and it is why so many women arrive at a winter wedding in a coat that is 6 inches longer than the dress and looks like a bathrobe, or at the office in a coat and a dress bought in different years that end in the same band. In the fitting room the coat and the dress are decided together, with 3 hems in play: the coat, the dress, and the boot. The rule is that they are never allowed to land in the same band, and that which one is longest depends on the day.
This guide gives the working rules for a coat over a dress, a coat over a blazer, a coat over boots, and the column that makes a woman look a foot taller in January, then puts each rule on a real Luna coat over a real Luna dress. It ends with the rule for a gown, which is the one everybody gets wrong at the December wedding.

“I was not sure a cape would suit me but this one brings shape and movement. I love how it defines my waist.”
The 3 hems
Coat over a knee length dress, for work. The coat is equal to the dress or up to 2 inches longer; equal reads most formal. A short coat, at mid thigh or above the knee, may be shorter than the dress as long as the dress shows no more than a few inches below it and the 2 hems do not fight at the calf.
Coat over a midi dress, for work. Either the coat is clearly shorter, a knee length or short tailored coat with the dress showing 3 to 6 inches below it on purpose, or the coat is a midi that is equal to the dress or 1 inch longer. Never 1 inch shorter; that is the accident.
Coat over a long dress, for the evening. The coat is equal or 1 to 3 inches longer, so the dress disappears into 1 column, and never 6 inches longer. Over a floor length gown, a coat that is slightly shorter lets the gown show at the hem, which is the intended effect of a cape or a light jacquard coat.
Boots. A knee boot and a knee length coat must not end in the same band; stagger them by a few inches, coat higher or boot higher. A knee coat over an ankle boot either covers the shaft entirely or leaves the boot fully visible; a sliver of sock between is the mistake. Over a midi dress, the boot shaft meets the hem or leaves a deliberate gap at the ankle bone, never a gap at the widest calf.
The column
A coat worn open over a dress and boots in 1 color family, or a coat that is a fraction longer than a dress in the same depth of color, makes 1 vertical line from collar to floor. It is the single most lengthening thing a woman can do in winter, and it is how a petite woman carries a midi coat. The coat may contrast, camel or gray over black, as long as the inner column is unbroken; the eye runs down the inside.

The black Nicole, a midi that flares from the waist, over the Olga at the knee: the coat is longer by a hand, the dress disappears, and navy inside black reads as 1 column. Over the Greta at the midi, the Nicole is equal or an inch longer, which is the other correct answer.

The coat over the blazer
In winter a blazer is the middle layer, and the coat is bought over it. The test is done with the blazer on: button the coat, hug yourself, reach forward. The coat sleeve covers the blazer sleeve with room for a glove; the coat hem covers the blazer hem entirely, which rules out a short coat over a long line blazer. A lined coat slides over a jacket; an unlined one grips the sleeve and rides up.

The Clara trench in navy wool, long and double breasted, is cut to close over the Barbara blazer with its shoulder seam on the bone. The Isidora in mocha does the same over the Agatha with more room at the chest. The Emma does not; it is a dress coat, cut slim, and it goes over a dress or a fine knit.

The short coat and the knee length dress
A coat that ends above the knee over a dress that ends at it: the dress shows 2 or 3 inches below the coat, the boot is an ankle boot fully visible or a knee boot that stops well below the coat hem, and the proportion reads as intended because the coat is clearly the shorter layer. It is the office in a car, the school run, and the December lunch. Over a midi dress the short coat chops the line; keep it for the knee.

The Iris short tailored coat in black, with its zip, belt, and tiered flounce skirt, over the Jody lace dress at the knee and an ankle boot; the same coat in cream beige over the Dora.
The knee coat and the midi
A knee length coat over a midi dress is the most common pairing in a winter wardrobe and the most often mishandled. Make the difference deliberate: the dress shows 3 to 6 inches below the coat, in a cloth and color that were meant to be seen, and the boot or the pump finishes below it. A dress that shows 1 inch is an accident.

The Lucy coat in black, fitted and flared to the knee, over the Lucy jacquard midi: the midnight jacquard shows a hand's width below the black wool, the collar frames the face, and the pump finishes the line. The Rea trench at the knee over the Iris A line midi is the daytime version.

The long coat and the column dress
A midi coat over a knee length dress makes the dress disappear and the woman taller; over a midi dress it must be equal or an inch longer. The coat is the outfit at the door and the dress is the outfit at the table, and both are correct only if the coat is the longer of the 2.

The Linea in ivory, a long midi, over the Rina midi in black: the coat clears the dress by an inch, and the black inside the ivory is the column reversed. The Kim trench, flared to a midi, over the Lucy sheath at the knee is the travel version.
The coat over the gown
Over a floor length gown the coat is equal, 1 to 3 inches longer, or deliberately shorter so the gown shows. What it is never is a knee length wool coat over a floor length gown; that is the December wedding photograph everyone regrets. The cape solves it in 1 movement: it covers the shoulders and the arms, leaves the neckline and the hem visible, and comes off at the coat check without disturbing the hair. The light jacquard coat solves it for a milder night.

The Selina cape over the Iris gown in navy or the Rebeka in plum. The Emma in silver jacquard over the Alis in bordeaux, with the gown showing below the knee length coat on purpose. For a coat that is equal to the gown, the Isidora, long and fitted, over the ivory Rebeka.

The pairings, in 1 table
| The coat | The dress | The rule | The boot or shoe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nicole wrap, midi | Olga, knee | Coat longer by a hand; the dress disappears | Knee boot well below the coat hem, or a pump |
| Nicole wrap, midi | Greta, midi | Equal, or the coat an inch longer | Pump, or an ankle boot meeting the hem |
| Iris short coat | Jody lace, knee | Dress shows 2 to 3 inches, on purpose | Ankle boot fully visible |
| Lucy coat, knee | Lucy jacquard midi | Dress shows 3 to 6 inches, on purpose | Pump |
| Linea midi | Rina midi | Coat clears the dress by an inch | Pump |
| Selina cape | Iris gown, floor | Gown shows below the cape | Strappy heel |
| Emma light coat, knee | Alis gown, floor | Gown shows below the coat, on purpose | Strappy heel |
| Isidora, long | Rebeka long | Equal, or the coat an inch longer | Closed pump |
| Clara trench | Barbara blazer beneath | Coat covers the blazer at hem and cuff | Pump or loafer |
The questions women ask before they invest
Does the coat have to be longer than the dress? No. A midi under a knee length coat, a gown under a cape, a knee dress under the short Iris: the dress is longer, and that is the point; the coat frames it and the dress does the length. A longer coat makes a column instead. Both are right when the 2 were decided together; what reads as accidental is a coat and a dress that end in the same band.
Which coat over a midi dress? A midi coat that covers the dress hem by 2 inches, the Linea or the Nicole, or a cape that ends at the knee and lets the dress do the length. A knee length coat over a midi cuts the leg at 2 points.
Which coat over a knee length dress? The knee length coat that ends 1 inch below the dress, the Lucy or the Rea; or the short Iris that ends 4 inches above it and makes the dress the point.
What goes over a gown in January? A cape, an evening coat that is longer and better than the dress, or a faux fur collar coat that ends at the knee and lets the gown fall from beneath it as a column; the Selina cape and the Lucy with the collar are the 2. Never a trench, never a puffer, never a shawl that slides.
Boots or pumps with a coat and a dress? A knee boot under a knee length coat and a knee length dress makes 1 line, and works in a sheer hose or an opaque tight that matches the boot. A pump with a midi and a midi coat. An ankle boot only with a trouser under the coat; with a dress it leaves 4 inches of shin that the coat then cuts.
How do I keep the coat and the dress from fighting? 1 of them is plain. A jacquard coat over a plain dress; a plain coat over a lace or a print. 2 patterns is a costume. And the shoe matches the coat, not the dress, because the coat is what the room sees first.
Can I wear a black coat over an ivory or a colored gown? Yes, if the coat is long enough to cover the gown hem or short enough to show it as a column, and if the shoe is black. What fails is a black coat that ends in the middle of a colored skirt.
Do I need a separate evening coat? 1 coat that is better than the dress covers a winter of evenings: the Linea in ivory, the Lucy with the collar, or the Emma jacquard. It is the coat that gets photographed on the steps; the dress is inside.
Frequently asked questions
Should a coat be longer than the dress? Not necessarily. A longer coat makes a column for the evening; a cape or a knee length coat over a gown or a midi lets the dress show below it, and a short coat over a knee dress does the same for the office. The dress can be longer than the coat. What matters is that the 2 were decided together and do not end in the same band.
What length coat with a midi dress? A knee length coat that is clearly shorter, or a midi coat that is equal or an inch longer. Never a coat 1 inch shorter than the dress; that is the accident the rule exists to prevent.
Can I wear knee boots with a knee length coat? Yes, if the coat hem and the boot shaft do not end in the same band. Stagger them by a few inches; a coat that ends above the boot or well below it both read as intended.
What coat goes over a gown? A cape, which leaves the neckline and hem visible and comes off in 1 movement; a light jacquard coat with the gown showing below it; or a long coat equal to or an inch longer than the gown. Never a knee length wool coat over a floor length dress.
Does the coat need to fit over a blazer? If you wear a blazer in winter, yes, and the coat is bought with the blazer on: hug yourself, reach forward, nothing pulls, and the coat covers the blazer at the hem and the cuff. The Nicole, the Clara, the Kim, the Isidora, and the Linea are cut for it; the Emma is a dress coat.
What is a column, and why does it matter? 1 color family from collar to floor, with the coat open over it or a fraction longer than it. It lengthens more than any heel and it is how a petite woman carries a midi coat.

How do I choose between the Nicole and the Clara over a navy dress?
The Nicole is a black wool wrap coat with a flared midi skirt, and it makes a column over a knee-length dress. The Clara is a navy long-fiber wool trench with a straighter, longer line, and it suits a woman who wants navy on navy or a trench shape. Both are made in the Pozarevac atelier and both close with a belt.
What coat can I wear over a dress with a wide skirt or full sleeves?
Over a dress with full sleeves or a wide skirt, wear the Selina cape in black at $770, in 100% long-fiber wool at 480 gsm with a 100% Bemberg cupro lining. It has arm openings instead of sleeves and falls in a wide drape over the arms, so a full sleeve keeps its shape under it.
- The Selina cape, $770, has a black faux fur collar that runs down the front and a self-tie belt at the waist.
- The Selina cape at $770 is cut with a single hand-finished back seam and arm openings for your hands.
- For a wide skirt, the black Nicole at $825 has a fitted bodice that flares into a full skirt, 45 inches long.
- The herringbone Nicole, also $825, has the same flared skirt in 100% long-fiber wool, 46 inches long.
- The black Lucy at $910 is a fit and flare coat in 100% long-fiber wool at 460 gsm, 40 inches to the knee.
Try the coat over the real dress before you decide. With a sleeved coat, the sleeve is the test, so slide your arm in and check that the dress sleeve does not bunch at the elbow. With the cape, tie the belt loosely so the drape stays wide over the skirt. Our model is 5 foot 9 and wears size 2, and on her the Nicole ends at mid calf and the Lucy at the knee, so a wide midi skirt shows below the Lucy.
