The Black Wool Cape and the Woman Who Wears It: A Story

The Black Wool Cape and the Woman Who Wears It: A Story

The Black Wool Cape and the Woman Who Wears It: A Story

A black wool cape coat is the coat of the woman who enters a room without adjusting anything. No sleeve to pull down, no button to find over a gown, no coat that flattened the dress on the way in. This is the story of the Selina wool cape in black, the sister coat in red with the same faux fur collar and sleeves, and the coats a woman owns alongside a cape, told through one November wedding and the Saturday after it.

She is 47. The wedding is in November, outdoors for the photographs and indoors for the rest, and the dress is floor length. Every coat she owns has sleeves that crush the dress’s sleeves and a row of buttons that presses on the bodice. She wants to arrive warm and step out of the coat looking exactly as she did in the mirror.

The step from the car to the church door

It is 40 degrees and the wind is coming across the churchyard. She swings her legs out of the car, stands, and the cape falls straight from her shoulders to mid-thigh with the gown moving underneath it. The black faux fur collar stands against her jaw. She has the belt tied at the waist, her clutch in one hand through the arm opening, and her husband’s arm in the other. Nothing about her is tucked, pulled, or held.

The Selina wool cape in black is long-fiber wool at 480 grams per square meter, the same cloth as our warmest coats, with a full Bemberg lining, concealed arm openings, a single back seam hand-finished to hold the drape from shoulder to hem, a black faux fur collar, and a tie belt at the waist. It is made in small runs in our atelier in Pozarevac, a few of each size and no reorders mid-season.

A cape does one thing a coat cannot. It has no sleeves, so it sits over a gown without crushing the sleeves, and no button row, so it never presses a bodice flat. On the church steps it moves with the dress instead of against it, and in the photograph the dress is still the dress. The 480 gram wool is what makes the drape hold in wind; a lighter cape lifts and folds, and this one hangs.

What her shoulders know

The weight sits across the shoulders rather than pulling at the arms, and by the second wearing she has stopped noticing it. The belt is found by hand. The collar is turned up on the sidewalk and folded down in the doorway. Her cape asks nothing of her arms, which is why she can carry a clutch, a hand, and a glass without once thinking about the coat. In 35 years of fittings, the cape is the piece women try on to be polite and then do not take off.

Saturday, the same cape over pants

The Saturday after the wedding the cape goes over a black turtleneck and black wide-leg pants to the museum with her daughter. Belt tied, collar down, a pointed boot. The mid-thigh hem lets the leg read as one line, and the collar does for a turtleneck what it did for the gown. This is the register most people never see a cape in, and it is the one that earns the price.

The sister piece, in red, with sleeves

The cape is a second outerwear piece, and we say so plainly: it is for the evenings and the arrivals, not for the 20-minute walk to the office in January. The woman who walks wants the same house and the same collar with sleeves, and that is the Selina wool coat in red with the faux-fur collar: double-breasted, a tie belt at the natural waist, a large removable red shawl collar, tonal buttons, and a hem below the knee. Collar on, it is the evening coat. Collar off, it is a red belted coat for a Tuesday.

The first coat, which the cape sits beside

Most clients own the cape alongside a Nicole or a Lucy, and this is the honest order to buy them in. The first coat is the daily one: the Nicole wool wrap coat in black, the same 480 gram long-fiber wool cut as a belted wrap with a wide collar and a midi skirt that flares from the waist, for the commute, the board, and the Friday dinner, in sizes 2 to 8.

The evening coat with sleeves is the Lucy wool coat with the fur collar in black: 460 gram wool, fitted through the waist, knee length, flared, with a large detachable black faux fur collar, for the evenings that begin with a walk of more than a block. It is in sizes 4 to 14.

And for the dinner where the coat stays on at the table, the Paula textured coat with the faux fur collar and cuffs: a black cloth with a curled texture that catches restaurant light, a shawl collar, fur cuffs at the wrist, a single button, knee length, in sizes 4 to 14. Four coats from one house, each for a different door. The cape is the one that makes the gown look like it was never under a coat at all.

Sizing, and what the price buys

The Selina cape is cut true to size and takes a gown or a knit without a change of size; the belt sets the waist wherever you tie it. It is in sizes 4, 8, and 12. It ships free from California, and you have 30 days to return it with no questions asked. Try it over the dress and over the turtleneck, belted and open, in daylight.

What $770 buys is long-fiber wool at 480 grams, a full Bemberg lining, a single hand-finished back seam, and a collar that closes the neck, made in small runs by the same atelier since 1990. Dry cleaned once a season and hung on a wide padded hanger, the cape is a ten-winter piece, and over a decade of evenings it costs less per arrival than the coat check tip.

Frequently asked questions

How do you style a black wool cape coat for a wedding or a gala?

Wear it over the dress with the belt tied at the natural waist and the collar standing, and let the cape fall open at the front so the dress shows from the throat to the belt. Because a cape has no sleeves, it sits over a gown without crushing the sleeves or the bodice, which is why it photographs better than a coat on the steps. Carry the clutch through the arm opening.

Is a wool cape warm enough for winter?

For the walk from the car to the door, yes. The Selina cape is long-fiber wool at 480 grams per square meter with a full Bemberg lining, the same cloth as our warmest coats, and the collar closes the neck where a coat loses most of its warmth. It has no sleeves, so it is an evening and occasion piece rather than a coat for a 20-minute commute in January.

Can a woman over 40 wear a cape coat without it looking like a costume?

Yes. A cape reads as costume when it is long, unbelted, and worn with nothing structured underneath. The Selina cape is cut to mid-thigh, belted at the waist, and collared, which gives it a waist and a shoulder line like a coat. Over a black turtleneck and wide-leg pants, or over a gown, it reads as the most self-possessed piece in the room at 44 and at 64.

What do you wear under a black cape coat during the day?

A black turtleneck and wide-leg pants in black or charcoal, so the leg reads as one line under the mid-thigh hem, with a pointed boot. Or a slim knit dress with the belt tied over it. Keep what is underneath close to the body; a cape has arm openings rather than sleeves, so anything bulky will show at the opening. The cape does the shape.

What size should I order in the Selina cape?

Your usual Luna size. The cape is cut true to size and the silhouette takes a gown or a knit underneath without a change of size; the belt sets the waist wherever you tie it. It is in sizes 4, 8, and 12. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller for a cleaner shoulder line, since there is no sleeve to fit. Shipping is free and you have 30 days to return it.

What to do next

If there is a gown in your November, the cape is the coat for it. Order your usual size, tie the belt at the waist the first time you try it, and stand in front of the mirror with your arms at your sides. Then pick the evening. The Selina cape and the Selina coat are in the winter coats collection; what to wear over an evening gown and the mother of the bride at a winter wedding carry the story into the dress.
