How to Buy a $600 Dress Online: 8 Checks Before You Order

Black lace cocktail dress with sheer sleeves, shown for a guide to buying a dress online

To buy a $600 dress online and keep it, check 8 things first: fiber, lining, length, closure, size chart, returns, maker and how the seller answers. Our Iris A line midi dress in blush floral, $625, shows most of them on one page. It lists 84% viscose, 10% metallic fibers and 6% elastane, a full viscose underlining, free US shipping and 30-day returns.

Every Luna dress sits between $550 and $770. That is real money for a dress you have only seen on a screen, so we wrote down the checks we would run ourselves. Each one comes with the figures our pages show today. Where a page is quiet, we say how to get the answer before you pay.

At a glance

  • The fabric line should name the fiber and the percent, as on the Lucy jacquard midi dress, $695, with 80% cotton and 20% structured technical crepe.
  • The lining should be named too, as the Iris off shoulder cocktail dress in black, $550, does with its upper and lower linings.
  • Length only means something next to your own height. Every Luna photo shows a model who is 5 foot 9 in size 2.
  • Your measurements go against the size chart and our sizing guide before anything goes in the cart.
  • Luna returns run 30 days with no questions asked, and US shipping is free and takes 2 to 5 days.
  • Every Luna piece is made in our own atelier, in the house Biljana Jovanovic founded in 1990.
  • A person answers at connect@lunafashionhouse.com and at +1 949-601-2846, and you can test that before you order.

What makes women hesitate before they order a $600 dress online?

The hesitation is rarely about the dress in the photo. It is about what the photo cannot show. How does the cloth feel, and where does the hem land on a woman shorter than the model? A smaller house adds one more question, which is whether anyone will answer the email.

Then there is the return. Each check below answers one of those worries with something you can read on a page or ask in one line. Our longer case for spending this much on one dress is in what a $600 dress should give you.

Check 1: Does the page name the fabric and its fiber?

Words like luxe and premium give you nothing to check. Look for a fiber name and a percent, and treat a page without them as a question you still have to ask.

The Lucy navy illusion sleeve sheath dress, $695, lists 97% structured technical crepe with 3% elastane, sourced from a European mill. The Iris off shoulder cocktail dress in champagne gold, $550, gives the full blend: 64% viscose, 16% metalized fibers, 15% polyamide and 5% elastane. The Amanda midi dress in floral, $695, is 100% breathable botanical fiber.

A small share of elastane in a fitted dress has a job to do. The Dora feather trim dress in black, $550, is polyester crepe with 5% elastane. Its page says the stretch holds the bodice line through a long seated dinner and a standing reception. If you want to read any label with more confidence, start with how to read a fabric label.

Check 2: Is the dress lined, and does the page say so?

A lining decides how a dress hangs and how it feels by the end of an evening. You cannot see it in a front photo, so the page has to tell you.

The Iris A line midi in blush floral, $625, is fully lined with a viscose underlining. The Bruna long lace gown in beige, $595, has two linings under a shell of 98% polyester and 2% elastane. The Laura short metallic dress in gold, $595, has a polyester and elastane upper lining.

Lace needs a lining more than most fabrics. The Jody lace cocktail dress in bordeaux, $550, has a fitted underlining that traces the body without clinging. On the Rina red floral maxi dress in black, $770, the floral embroidery sits on sheer black mesh over a lined body. When a page says nothing about lining, write and ask before you order. Our note on why a lined dress feels different explains what to expect from one.

Check 3: Where will the hem fall on someone your height?

Every Luna photo shows a model who is 5 foot 9 and wears size 2. Start there. If you are shorter than 5 foot 9, the hem will land lower on you than in the photo. If you are taller, it will land higher.

On the model, the Jody lace cocktail dress in black, $550, stops at the knee. The Lucy jacquard midi in midnight blue, $695, falls below the knee toward mid calf. The Iris off shoulder maxi gown in navy, $770, reaches the floor.

For the exact number, ask the seller for the measured length from the shoulder to the hem in your size. Then hold a tape measure against yourself from the same point and see where that number lands on your leg. A knee length dress that lands 2 inches lower on you reads as a different dress. This check matters most for cocktail lengths. Our 6 tests before you invest cover what to do once the dress arrives.

Check 4: How does the dress close?

Look at the back photo and the description for the closure. You want to know where the zipper or buttons sit and whether you can close the dress on your own.

Some Luna dresses show the closure in front. The Olga wrap dress in navy, $695, has gold tone buttons down the overlap and a belted waist. The Greta off shoulder dress in navy, $695, has a double breasted bodice with silver buttons. The Charlotte elegant midi dress, $595, closes the waist with a wide belt and a large black sculpted buckle.

Strapless and fitted dresses need the most care here. The Melisa short corset dress in black, $670, has a straight strapless corset bodice with a satin waist sash. If the back photo does not show the zipper, ask where it sits. You may be dressing alone at 6 in the morning before a wedding.

Check 5: How do I choose the right size online, and which measurements matter?

Measure your bust, waist and hips with a soft tape over a thin layer, then write the numbers down. Compare the numbers with the size chart on the page and with our Luna sizing guide, and only then pick a size.

The measurement that matters most depends on the cut. In a fitted sheath like the Iris off shoulder cocktail dress in anthracite, $550, the bust and the hip both have to fit. A strapless bodice like the Melissa strapless dress in white polka dot, $770, depends on the bust and the waist. In an A line like the Betty ruffle dress in black polka dot, $695, the fitted bodice decides the size.

If you fall between two sizes, take the size that fits the fitted part of the dress. A wrap with a belt, like the Olga, lets you set the waist yourself. When you are still unsure, send us your 3 numbers and the dress name, and ask which size to order.

Check 6: What return policy should I look for before I order?

Read the return policy before you read the size chart. Look for the number of days and whether you need a reason. Then check who pays the postage back and how the refund is paid.

Luna returns run 30 days with no questions asked, and you start the return yourself online. US orders ship free from the US in dollars and arrive in 2 to 5 days. That gives you time to try the dress at home with your shoes and to sit down in it.

Check 7: Who makes the dress, and where?

A named maker, a founding year and a place are all things you can check.

Luna Fashion House was founded in 1990 by Biljana Jovanovic, and every piece is made in our atelier. The US business is run by Amaretta LLC from Newport Beach, California, and the house relaunched in the US in 2025. Our atelier finished the floral embroidery on the Rina cyclamen floral maxi dress in black, $770.

The lace pieces are made there too. The Jody lace cocktail dress in midnight green, $550, is viscose with a European lace overlay in deep forest green. The same Jody shape comes in 4 colors, and the story of the lace cocktail dress in four colors explains how we chose them.

Check 8: How does the seller answer a question?

Send one question before you order. The reply tells you how the house will treat you after you have paid.

Our team is at connect@lunafashionhouse.com and +1 949-601-2846, and both are on our About page. Good first questions are the measured length in your size, where the zipper sits and which size fits your 3 numbers. A clear answer to any of those settles more than another hour of scrolling.

If dresses tend to end up unworn in your closet, our fitting room method is a good place to start.

Is a $600 dress better than a $200 dress, and what do I get for the extra money?

A $200 dress can be a lovely dress, and price alone tells you very little. The extra money should buy things you can check. Look for a named fiber, a lining, construction you can see and a maker who answers.

The Lucy jacquard midi dress, $695, is woven into a tonal jacquard over a deep midnight blue ground, with a breathable botanical lining. The Iris A line midi, $625, carries 10% metallic fibers in the weave and the print placed across the body and skirt. Those are details you can name, and they are the reason to pay more.

If a page gives you no more to check at $600 than at $200, keep your money until you find one that does. Our piece on the investment dress worn for years covers how to choose the one you will wear most.

Which Luna dresses pass the checks today?

These dresses name the fiber with its percent and the lining on the page. All of them are made in our atelier and ship free in the US with 30-day returns.

For the length and the closure, write to us before you order and ask for your size. The full range is in all Luna dresses. Shorter pieces are in cocktail dresses and long ones in evening dresses. For a wedding, see wedding guest dresses and jumpsuits.

If this is your first dress at this price, read the cocktail dress for women in their 30s next. The same 8 checks work for outerwear, and how to buy a coat online walks through them for coats. Pick your dress, measure tonight and send us your 3 numbers with its name.
