The Winter Coat for Women in Their 30s: Polished, Tailored, Built to Last
In your 30s, buy a belted 100% wool coat that reaches mid calf, in black or gray, and wear it to client meetings and to weddings. At Luna that coat is the Nicole wrap coat in solid black, $825, which measures 45 inches from the back of the neck.
The black Nicole is long fiber wool at 480 grams per square meter, with a 100% Bemberg cupro lining and hand finished horsehair canvas in the lapel. Its sister is the Nicole in herringbone gray, also $825, at 46 inches. This guide covers shape, length, cloth, color, what goes underneath and which coat to buy first and second. Every length here is measured on a size 2, and our model is 5 foot 9.
At a glance
- For your first coat, choose the black Nicole at $825, belted and double breasted, in 100% long fiber wool.

What coat should a woman in her 30s buy to look polished at work and at weddings?
She should buy one tailored wool coat that works with a suit on Tuesday and a midi dress on Saturday. The black Nicole was cut for that week. It is double breasted with a wide notched collar and a self fabric belt at the natural waist, and the skirt flares from the belt to mid calf. The belt comes as a buckle or a tie.
Your 30s are often the decade of the first real investment pieces. The first coat at this price should still feel right when you are 40, so we would keep the first one plain in line and generous in cloth. The details that make it last are inside, where a fitting room mirror cannot see them: the canvas in the lapel, the lining and the seams.
If you already own a good black coat, start with the gray herringbone Nicole, $825. It has a 6 button double breasted front and a tie belt, and it suits a wardrobe that already leans black.
Which shape looks tailored at a client meeting?
A double breasted front with a belt at the waist reads as tailored from across a conference room. Both Nicoles are built this way, and the belt gives the long coat a waist without any extra layer underneath. When you take your seat, the wide collar keeps its shape around the face.
The second tailored shape is the fitted coat with princess seams and a full skirt to the knee. The black Lucy, $910, and the red Lucy, $910, are cut this way in 460 gram wool. The faux fur collar fastens with concealed snaps, so on a weekday you take it off and wear a plain double breasted wool coat to the office.
For a long trench line, look at the Clara in navy, $910. It is 87% long fiber wool and 13% nylon at 420 grams per square meter, with a full Bemberg lining, a black faux fur collar and a tie belt. At 50 inches it reaches the lower calf and covers the jacket of a suit with room to spare.
How long should the coat be in your 30s?
Mid calf is the length we would buy first. At 45 and 46 inches, the two Nicoles cover a knee length skirt and most midi dresses, and they look right over trousers with a pump or an ankle boot. A coat that ends above the dress hem looks borrowed, and mid calf avoids that for most of what you own.
Knee length suits the evening coat, since a fuller skirt stays easy to sit and dance in. The Lucys measure 40 inches. For short days and travel, the Iris in deep black, $770, ends 3 to 4 inches above the knee at 36 inches, with a full front zip and a clasp belt. It also comes in beige, $770, and in brown with a tonal floral jacquard hem, $770.
Our model is 5 foot 9 and wears a size 2. If you are shorter, the same coat falls lower on you, so compare the measured length on each page with a coat you already own. The Luna sizing guide lists the measurements for every size.
What fabric and lining should a coat at $700 to $900 have?
At this price the page should give you the fiber as a percentage, the grams per square meter and the lining fiber. Our 100% wool coats are the two Nicoles, the two Lucys and the Selina cape. All five have a 100% long fiber wool shell and a 100% Bemberg cupro lining. The Nicoles and the cape are 480 grams per square meter, and the Lucys are 460.
A Bemberg cupro lining is smooth against a knit or a silk blouse. Horsehair canvas in the lapel is sewn in instead of glued, and it holds the roll of the collar. Of our coats, only the two Nicoles carry that canvas, and their pages say so.
Some of our coats are blends or synthetics, chosen for a different job. The Selina coat in red, $825, is 70% wool and 30% polyester, double breasted, with a removable red faux fur collar. The Isidora in mocha, $680, is 55% polyester, 35% cotton and 10% elastane, with a woven jacquard texture and no belt. Each one is fully lined, and each page lists the fiber.
Which color should come first?
Black or charcoal gray comes first for most women in their 30s. Black goes over a navy suit, a printed dress and a black tie optional invitation. The herringbone Nicole reads as gray from a distance and as a woven pattern up close, which helps when your wardrobe already leans black.
The second coat is where color belongs. A red coat makes a winter wedding photograph, and the red Lucy keeps its tonal red faux fur collar for the evening. Navy is the quieter choice for the office, and the Clara is our navy coat. For a pale coat, the Linea in ivory, $770, is single breasted with 3 buttons, a notch lapel and a belt with a buckle, at 48 inches.
What do you wear under it at work and at a wedding?
For work, the Lucy and the Clara pages state that the shoulder sits cleanly over a tailored blazer and that the sleeve clears a blazer cuff by 1/2 inch. The Nicoles run true to size with a fit and flare line, and the herringbone page advises the smaller size when you are between two. Try a coat on over the thickest jacket you plan to wear under it, and keep the tags on until you are sure.
For a wedding, match the coat length to the dress. A knee length cocktail dress sits under the 40 inch Lucy. A midi dress sits under a Nicole. For a floor length gown, wear the Selina cape, $770, open, with its self tie belt and arm openings, so the skirt keeps its full shape. The cape has a black faux fur collar and a single hand finished back seam.

Which coat should you buy first, and which second?
Buy the daily coat first, and choose the black or the herringbone Nicole at $825. It goes to work, to dinner, to a daytime wedding and to the airport. Wear it through one full winter before you buy the second coat, so you learn which days it does not cover.
For most women the gap shows up in the evening, and the second coat is the Lucy in black or red at $910. Women who travel for work often find the gap is a lighter coat for 50 to 70 degree days instead. In that case, the Linea or the Rea jacquard trench in beige, $770, does the job. The Rea is woven jacquard at 340 grams per square meter, with the pattern woven at the loom, storm flaps and a self tie belt, and it is cut straight at 40 inches.
For evenings that call for pattern, the Emma in teal floral jacquard, $880, and the Emma in silver floral jacquard, $880, are knee length at 42 inches with metallic threads in the weave. The Paula in black, $770, is a textured botanical viscose with a faux fur shawl collar and cuffs, fully lined in Bemberg and 42 inches long.
Our light coats for 50 to 70 degrees guide explains which of these fits a mild climate, and the light coats collection shows them together. The full range of heavier coats is in our winter coats collection.
