The Capsule Wardrobe for Women in Their 30s: 10 Pieces for the Decade
A capsule wardrobe for women in their 30s is 10 pieces that work together and are bought to last. In your 30s several reasons to rethink your closet tend to arrive in the same year. There is the first senior job, the move to a new city and the body after a baby. Then a morning comes when you notice that half the closet came from stores you would not walk into today.
This guide builds that capsule piece by piece, starting with the coat. It ends with a full week of outfits and the way the same 10 pieces grow into your 40s.
Shop the pieces in this story: Winter Coats, Light Coats, Blazers, and Dresses. Complete size runs are listed first.
What changes about dressing in your 30s
Dressing in your 30s changes when other people start making decisions about you before you speak. A new team, a client, a landlord in a new city and the parents at day care all form a view in the first minute. It is the move from looking cute to being taken seriously.
You do not have to give up your own taste to make that move. Keep the fitted waist and the color you love, and let go of anything that pills after 3 washes.
A woman with a new role or a new baby also has fewer minutes in the morning, and with 10 pieces that all combine, getting dressed takes fewer of them.
The 10 pieces of a capsule wardrobe for your 30s
The 10 pieces are 2 coats, 1 blazer, 2 pairs of pants, 1 shirt, 1 knit, 2 dresses and 1 jumpsuit, in black and navy with 1 deep green.
Buy them in this order. The 10 pieces are the Lucy black wool coat, the Iris short tailored coat, the Alexa tailored blazer in navy with the matching Greta wide leg pants, a second pair of Greta pants in black, the Barbara wrap shirt in black, the Jody lace cardigan, the Rebeka dress, the Jody lace cocktail dress in midnight green and the Aria jumpsuit.
Start with the coat
The coat is the first purchase in a 30s capsule, since people see the coat before they see anything else you wear. The Lucy wool coat in black is long-fiber wool at 460 grams per square meter with a full Bemberg lining. We handcraft it in our atelier in Pozarevac, Serbia. It is fitted through the waist, closes with 2 rows of buttons and flares to the knee. The large faux fur collar is removable, and a small pompom hangs on a chain at the front.
The shoulder is cut to sit over a tailored blazer. The Lucy goes over the Alexa suit on Monday and over the Jody dress on Saturday. With the collar on it is an evening coat, and without it you can wear it to the office every day of the winter.

The Iris short tailored coat covers the weeks before the wool comes out. It is a cream cotton blend jacquard with a wide collar, a front zipper and a buckled belt. The tiered hem ends above the knee, so wear it with the Greta pants and the Aria jumpsuit rather than over a dress.

If you moved to a colder city, our guide to wool winter coats by temperature explains which cloth weight fits which winter.
The dress that covers 4 occasions
The dress that covers 4 occasions is a black knee length sheath with sleeves you can take off. The Rebeka dress in black is a fitted crepe sheath with a V neckline and a small back vent. The sheer chiffon cape sleeves come off. It is cut and constructed in our Pozarevac atelier.
With the sleeves off and the Alexa blazer over it, it goes to a client presentation. With the sleeves on it goes to an anniversary dinner, and under the Lucy coat it goes to a fall wedding. In December it goes to the holiday party as it is.

The blazer and the pants that make a suit
A suit in your 30s is 2 pieces in the same color that also work apart. The Alexa tailored blazer in navy is lined, with notch lapels, covered buttons, flap pockets and wide three-quarter sleeves. The Greta wide leg pants in navy are lined, with a high rise and a back zipper. A panel crosses the front, and silver eyelets laced in red sit at the waistband. Together they are a navy suit, and on other days the blazer goes over the Rebeka dress while the pants go with the black wrap shirt.

If your body changed after a baby, a high rise with a lined wide leg asks less of it than a slim pant does. It does not need you to be a particular size by Monday. The Greta in black has the same cut and the same red lacing, so it becomes your second pair without a second fitting. The Barbara wrap shirt in black wraps across the waist, and the Jody lace cardigan is the soft layer for the cold office.
The evening piece
The evening piece in a 30s capsule is the one you wear to the wedding where you know only the bride. The Jody lace cocktail dress in midnight green is a fitted knee length dress with a lace bodice and short lace sleeves. A sheer mesh yoke sits at the neckline, and soft draping crosses the hip. The green is so dark it reads close to black indoors and shows its color in daylight. It is the only color in the capsule, and it stays quiet.

The Aria jumpsuit in black is for the black tie optional invitation. It has a sheer mesh yoke, cap sleeves, a buckled belt and wide legs that reach the floor in heels. The Lucy coat goes over it for the arrival.

The cost per wearing
Cost per wearing is the price of a piece divided by the number of times you wear it. The Lucy coat is $910. Worn 3 days a week for the 20 cold weeks of a winter, it is worn about 60 times. Over 5 winters that comes to 300 wearings at about $3 each. A $200 coat replaced every winter costs $1,000 over the same 5 winters.
Nobody budgets for the third cheap coat, and most of us have bought it anyway.
The rest of the capsule is cheap to keep. Every piece except the coats is machine washable on a gentle cycle, then air dried and steamed or ironed on low. You skip the dry cleaner, and the pieces you wear most are ready by the next morning. The 2 coats are dry clean only, once a season.
A week of outfits from the 10 pieces
This is a week in the first month of a senior role in a new city, dressed only from the capsule.
- Monday is the first day in the new office. Wear the Alexa blazer and the navy Greta pants as a suit, with the black wrap shirt and the Lucy coat with the collar off.
- On Tuesday you wear the black Greta pants, the wrap shirt and the Jody cardigan to a day of meetings, with the Iris coat for the walk.
- On Wednesday the Rebeka dress goes to a client presentation with the sleeves off and the Alexa blazer over it.
- On Thursday you pick the Aria jumpsuit for the team dinner, with the Jody cardigan for the restaurant and the Lucy coat for the street.
- On Friday the Alexa blazer goes over the black Greta pants for drinks after work. Navy over black reads as a choice.
- On Saturday the Jody lace dress goes to a friend’s wedding under the Lucy coat with the collar on.
- On Sunday you wear the navy Greta pants and the wrap shirt to brunch in the new neighborhood, with the Iris coat.

How the capsule grows into your 40s
In your 40s you add to the capsule rather than replace it. Around 40 you will probably want a midi dress, a second blazer in a color and a pair of light pants for spring. The Lucy coat and the Alexa suit stay exactly where they are. The fall capsule wardrobe for women over 40 picks up at 12 pieces. Our 15 piece elegant capsule wardrobe shows the full system once your calendar fills.
Frequently asked questions
What should a capsule wardrobe for women in their 30s include?
A capsule wardrobe for women in their 30s usually has 10 pieces: 2 coats, 1 blazer, 2 pairs of pants, 1 shirt, 1 knit, 2 dresses and 1 jumpsuit. At Luna it starts with the Lucy wool coat, the Alexa navy blazer with the matching Greta pants, and the Rebeka dress.
How should a woman dress in her 30s?
A woman in her 30s dresses well when her clothes help people take her seriously in the first minute, without hiding who she is. In practice that means fewer pieces with better construction, a fitted waist where she likes one, 1 good coat, and colors that combine. A black sheath with removable sleeves, such as the Rebeka dress, covers work, dinner, a wedding and a party.
What are the wardrobe essentials for a woman in her 30s?
The wardrobe essentials for a woman in her 30s start with a wool coat that closes over a blazer. Add a blazer with matching pants, a second pair of pants, a shirt and a soft knit. Finish with a dress that covers several occasions and 1 evening piece. Buy the coat first, since the rest of the capsule is chosen to sit under it.
Is 1 expensive coat better than 3 cheap ones?
A single well made coat usually costs less per wearing than 3 cheap ones. The Lucy wool coat is $910. Worn 3 days a week through the cold weeks, it reaches about 300 wearings over 5 winters. That is about $3 a wearing. A $200 coat replaced every winter costs $1,000 over the same 5 winters.
What can I wear after a baby when my old clothes do not fit?
After a baby, start with pants that have a high rise and a lined wide leg. They ask less of the body than slim pants do. The Greta wide leg pants have a back zipper and a lined leg. Add a wrap shirt and an open knit, and wait on fitted dresses until your body settles.
How do I care for a capsule wardrobe?
Every Luna piece in this capsule except the coats is machine washable on a gentle cycle, then air dried and steamed or ironed on low. You choose the detergent and skip the weekly trip to the cleaner. The Lucy and Iris coats are dry clean only, and once a season is usually enough.
Start with the Lucy coat, and build the other 9 pieces under it. Order your usual size, try it at home over a blazer, and if it is not right you have 30 days to send it back. The full range is in Winter Coats.
