The Right Dress and Blazer Length for Your Body Shape
The Right Dress and Blazer Length for Your Body Shape
The right dress length for your body shape is the one that stops where your body narrows, not where it widens, and the right blazer length is the one that puts your waist where you want the eye to find it. Those two rules cover every figure below, and they come from 35 years of fittings in our Pozarevac atelier.
You may be reading this because something changed: a new role, a wedding on the calendar, a body that is not the one you dressed five years ago. This guide tells you where a hem should end, where a blazer should stop, what a waist seam and a wrap do, and how to check it in a fitting room.

Three hem lengths and what each one does
Knee length ends at the kneecap or just above it and shows the narrowest part of the leg, which is why it reads as neat in a boardroom and correct at a daytime wedding. Midi ends between knee and ankle, ideally at the slimmest point of the calf; a midi at the fullest part of the calf shortens the leg on every figure. Maxi ends at the ankle or the floor and gives the longest unbroken line, which flatters more bodies than women expect, provided the waist is placed.
The Olga wrap dress in navy is our knee-length reference: a notched collar, cap sleeves, a wide belt with a gold buckle, and a straight skirt that finishes at the knee. The wrap crosses at the waist and the belt fixes it there.

Where a blazer should end: hip, high hip, or cropped
A hip-length blazer ends two to four inches below the hip bone. It suits a rectangle, a tall frame, and broad shoulders, because the length below balances the width above. A high-hip blazer ends at the hip bone and is the most flexible length, especially over a dress. A cropped blazer ends at the natural waist and is the answer for a short torso, a long torso with short legs, and most petite frames, because it raises the visual waist.
The Barbara tailored blazer in black is hip length with a notch lapel, four buttons, flap pockets with a fine red line, and a waist shaped by seams: the blazer to try first if you do not know which length you are.

Body shape, hem, and blazer length at a glance
| Figure | Dress hem | Blazer length |
|---|---|---|
| Hourglass | Knee or midi, placed waist | High hip, shaped |
| Pear | Midi or knee, A-line | Cropped or high hip, never at the widest hip |
| Apple or midsection | Knee or flared midi | High hip, open front |
| Rectangle | Any, with a seam or belt | Hip length, shaped waist |
| Petite | Knee or above-ankle maxi | Cropped or high hip |
| Tall | Midi or maxi | Hip length or longer |
| Larger bust | V or wrap neckline | Closure at the waist, low lapel |
| Broad shoulders | V neckline, defined waist | Hip length, natural shoulder |
Hourglass and a larger bust: what a wrap does
A wrap crosses the body on the diagonal and fastens at the waist. It creates a V at the neck, which gives a fuller bust somewhere to go, and it draws the fabric in at the point you want narrow. For an hourglass it is the simplest dress there is; for a larger bust it is also the safest blazer shape.
How should a blazer fit over a large bust? Buy for the shoulder and the bust, and let the waist be taken in. The Lucy tailored jacquard blazer in midnight blue closes with a single beaded clasp at the waist, opens in a V above it, and finishes at the high hip with flap pockets. Sit down in it: the lapel should stay flat and the clasp should not pull.

Pear: keep the hem off the widest point
The pear rule is about where lines stop. A blazer that ends at the fullest part of the hip draws a line across it; a hem at the fullest part of the thigh does the same. So the blazer ends above the hip and the dress hem ends below it, with a skirt that moves away from the body rather than following it.
The Iris A-line midi dress in blush floral is the shape: a high neck and long sleeves that give the upper body presence, a thin belt, and an A-line skirt that flares to a handkerchief hem below the knee. The eye reads shoulders and waist and passes the hip.

Apple and the midsection: what a waist seam does
Dress length for an apple shape over 40 is the search we see most, and the answer is about where the seam sits. A waist seam just under the bust, at the narrowest point of the torso, lets the skirt fall away from the middle instead of across it. Below it, a flared skirt to the knee or mid-calf gives the leg its full length. A blazer over it stays open, or closes at one point under the bust.
The Lucy jacquard midi dress in midnight blue has that seam, a V neckline, sheer three-quarter sleeves, and a flared skirt with a sheer band above a mid-calf hem. The cut never asks the fabric to touch the middle; more in our guide to dresses that skim the midsection.

Rectangle and tall: build a waist with seams
A rectangle has shoulders and hips of similar width and a waist not much narrower than either, so the garment draws the waist: princess seams, a belt, a wrap, or a blazer whose side seams curve in. Length is generous here, because a longer line reads as longer, not wider. A tall woman can carry a blazer at the hip or below it, and a dress at the midi or the maxi.
The Agatha pearl detail blazer in ivory is hip length with a notch lapel, two pearl buttons, pearl-trimmed flap pockets, and a line that curves in at the waist: on a rectangle it draws the waist, on a tall frame it carries the length. For the maxi, the Iris off-shoulder maxi gown in navy places a banded waist under a fitted bodice and lets a flared skirt run to the floor.

Petite, short torso, long torso, and short legs
All four share one fix: raise the waist. The best blazer length for a short torso is cropped, so the jacket does not use up the short distance between bust and hip. Blazer length for a long torso and short legs is also cropped, for the opposite reason: a jacket that ends at the waist and a high-waisted skirt or pant that meets it move the point where the leg appears to begin. A petite frame benefits from both, and from a sleeve that shows the wrist.
The Rina cropped blazer ends exactly at the waist, with a notch lapel picked out in white, three buttons, and elbow-length sleeves. Over a knee-length dress or a high-waisted pant it leaves the longest possible leg. A petite woman should still check a midi against her own calf.

Broad shoulders and sleeve length
What length blazer for broad shoulders? Hip length or longer, with the shoulder seam on the bone rather than past it, no added padding, and a lapel that opens low. On a dress, a V neckline and a placed waist do the same work; an off-the-shoulder line adds width and is better kept for a pear.
Sleeve length is the detail a tailor sees first. A full sleeve ends at the wrist bone. A three-quarter sleeve ends two to three inches above it and shows the narrowest part of the arm, which reads as lighter on a petite frame and a fuller upper arm. A sleeve at the knuckle makes any blazer look borrowed.
Fitting-room checks from 35 years of fittings
- Find your narrowest point. Press a hand where the torso is smallest, usually just under the ribs. The waist of the garment belongs there.
- Sit down. A blazer that pulls at the closure or a dress that rides up when seated is a size or a shape wrong.
- Look at the hem against your leg. It should end where the leg narrows, never at the widest point of calf or thigh.
- Check the shoulder seam. It sits on the bone. Past it, go down a size and let the waist out; pulling, go up and take the waist in.
- Raise your arms. The hem should lift no more than an inch or two. More means the armhole is too low.
- Walk. A wrap that opens, a belt that slides, or a skirt that twists means the waist is not where the garment thinks it is.
The objections, answered plainly
I am between sizes. Buy for the shoulder and the bust, which a tailor cannot easily change, and have the waist and hem adjusted.
I have been told to hide my middle, my hips, my arms. Nothing here hides. A placed seam, a cleared hip, and a wrist showing are proportion, which is what makes a woman look like herself at 34 and at 58. Our guide to looking slimmer in a dress works the same way: line and fabric, not concealment.
And the coat? It ends below the dress hem or well above it, never within an inch of it. Our guide to coats by body type covers the wrap, the belted midi, and the trench figure by figure.
Care and returns. Every dress and blazer above is machine washable on gentle, air dried, and steamed on low, and ships from California with 30-day returns, so the fitting room can be your own bedroom.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best dress length for an apple shape over 40?
Knee length or a midi that flares from a seamed waist. The seam sits at the narrowest point under the bust and the skirt moves away below it, so nothing clings at the middle. The Lucy jacquard midi dress in midnight blue is cut this way. Finish the hem above or below the widest part of the calf.
What is the best blazer length for a short torso?
A cropped blazer that ends at the natural waist, so the jacket does not swallow the short distance between bust and hip. The Rina cropped blazer ends at the waist with elbow sleeves, which leaves the forearm bare and lengthens the line. Wear it over a high-waisted skirt or pant so the waist reads as one point.
What blazer length works for a long torso and short legs?
Cropped or high-hip, worn over something high-waisted. A hip-length blazer over a mid-rise pant moves the visual waist down and shortens the leg. Ending the jacket at the waist and raising the pant to meet it makes the leg appear to begin higher. A three-quarter sleeve helps by showing the wrist.
How should a blazer fit over a large bust?
Buy for the shoulder and bust, then let the waist be taken in. The button or clasp should sit at or below the bust, never across it, and the lapel should open in a V. The Lucy tailored jacquard blazer in midnight blue closes with a single clasp at the waist and opens above it, which is the shape that lies flat when you sit.
What length blazer suits broad shoulders?
Hip length or longer, with a natural shoulder and a lapel that opens low. Length below the hip balances width above it. Keep the shoulder seam on the bone, not beyond it, and choose a sleeve that ends at the wrist. A cropped, boxy jacket adds width where you already have it.
Start with one dress and one blazer, chosen for where they end, and check them against the six points above. Complete runs are listed first in Dresses and Blazers.
