What to Wear to a Charity Gala in Your 30s and 40s
At a charity gala in your 30s or 40s, wear a floor length evening jumpsuit or a long gown in a deep color when the invitation says black tie optional. Wear a knee length evening dress when it says cocktail. If you are chairing, start with the Aria Jumpsuit in Black ($595). It has cap sleeves, a mesh yoke and wide legs to the floor, so you can walk up to a podium without lifting a skirt. Each Luna evening page also names the coat we would wear over the piece and gives the length of that coat.
What do black tie, black tie optional and cocktail mean on a gala invitation?
Black tie asks for a floor length gown. Black tie optional keeps the gown as the safe choice and also accepts a floor length evening jumpsuit or a midi evening dress. Cocktail means a dress at or just below the knee in lace, sheen or a textured weave. When the invitation says only “gala”, ask the event chair.
We made the pieces in this guide for black tie optional and cocktail galas. If your invitation says black tie with no other word, ask the host whether an evening jumpsuit is welcome.
What to wear to a charity gala in your 30s and 40s
In your 30s and 40s, a gala usually shares the month with other evenings. The same month can hold a client dinner, a wedding and the office party. So buy for the role you play at the gala, and count the other evenings the piece will cover.
If you are chairing or on the committee
The chair is on her feet from the afternoon walkthrough to the last auction lot. She also climbs to a stage at least once. A jumpsuit handles that day better than a gown. The Aria has a crew neck and a mesh net yoke across the top of the bodice. A narrow belt with a rectangular metal buckle sits at the waist, and the wide leg falls straight. If you wear it to the gala, a December party and a spring wedding, the $595 jumpsuit costs about $198 an evening.
If the committee will be in black, the Jody Lace Jumpsuit in Midnight Green ($550) gives you a color. It is sleeveless, with a European lace bodice and a sheer illusion yoke. A slim belt sits above wide legs. Its page asks you to check the hem against your heel so it clears the floor by half an inch. Do that fitting a week before the gala.
If you are going as your partner’s guest
Dress to the hosts’ code and choose a color that sits well beside a black tuxedo. The Iris Off-Shoulder Maxi Gown in Navy ($770) has a pleated off-shoulder band across the upper arm. The semi-sheer waist carries fine tonal beading above a long A-line skirt. The gown measures 56 inches from the back of the neck to the hem on a size 2. Read our guide to a partner’s work gala for the dinner itself.
If you are hosting a table of clients
You arrive before your guests and greet them at the door. Then you host the dinner and walk them to the coat check. For a gala with a cocktail code, you can wear the Lucy Navy Illusion Sleeve Sheath Dress ($695) from the office straight to the ballroom. It is a crepe sheath with a shirt collar and sheer mesh sleeves to the wrist. It ends at the knee, 39 inches on a size 2.
The Jody Lace Cocktail Dress in Bordeaux ($550) suits a December benefit. It has a lace bodice in deep wine, short lace sleeves and soft draping at the waist. It also ends at the knee. Our December party guide for your 30s and 40s shows the same dress at 3 parties.
If you have 2 events in 1 season
The Tina Two Layer Jumpsuit ($695) has navy black wide legs to the floor and a belted waist. Its detachable upper layer is ivory chiffon printed with pink and orange roses. Wear the layer to a spring or summer gala. Without it, the navy black base works for a daytime event. We make it through size 16.
You will find all of these in our gala, charity and awards outfits collection. Our charity gala outfit guide goes deeper on colors and on dressing as an honoree or a donor.
What to wear over it, by season
Between October and March, your coat will be in the photographs taken outside the venue. The Nicole Wool Wrap Coat in Solid Black ($825) is double breasted in long fiber wool, with a wide collar and a belt. It ends at mid calf, 45 inches from the back of the neck on a size 2. Over the 56 inch Iris gown, about 11 inches of skirt show below it. The wide legs of the Aria take a coat of any length.
In the warm months, carry a wrap for the air conditioning in the ballroom. Our guide to what to wear over an evening gown shows how each coat looks over each gown.
What to avoid
If you will be on a stage, skip a hem you have to hold on the stairs. Ask the committee about the color of the stage backdrop, so you do not match it in every photograph. With clients at your table, leave the full sequin look to the honoree. Above the knee is too short for a black tie optional gala.
Shoes and bag
Wear a heel you have already stood in for a whole evening. If you are chairing, a block heel will be easier on your feet. Choose a clutch that holds your phone, a lipstick and a card, and leave the work tote at the office. If the day starts at your desk, the Aria page suggests a black blazer over the mesh yoke until you reach the venue.
A short checklist
- Read the dress code, and ask the chair when it says only “gala”.
- Count the other evenings the piece will cover this season.
- Try a floor length jumpsuit with the heel you will wear.
- Plan the coat with the outfit in the cold months.
For a wedding on the same calendar, read wedding guest dresses for women in their 30s and 40s. For a black tie optional evening that is not a gala, see black tie optional in your 30s and 40s. Every other event is on the Shop by Occasion page.
Questions about charity galas in your 30s and 40s
Should I wear a long dress or a short dress to a charity gala?
Let the invitation decide. At a black tie optional gala, wear a long gown, a floor length evening jumpsuit or a midi evening dress. At a cocktail gala, a dress at or just below the knee is right.
Can I wear a jumpsuit to a gala?
You can at most charity galas, as long as it is an evening jumpsuit with wide legs to the floor. The Aria Jumpsuit in Black and the Jody Lace Jumpsuit in Midnight Green are both cut that way. For a strict black tie invitation, ask the host first.
What should I wear to a gala as a guest of my partner?
Dress to the code the hosts chose. Pick a color that sits well beside a black tuxedo, such as navy, midnight green or bordeaux. The navy Iris gown in this guide works for that.
What color should I wear to a fundraising gala?
Navy, bordeaux, midnight green and black with lace or sheen all look right in an evening room. Ask the committee whether the cause has a color. Avoid white and ivory unless the invitation asks for them.
What should I wear to my company’s work gala?
Follow the dress code on the invitation and dress for a room of colleagues and clients. A sleeve or a covered shoulder helps, as on the Lucy Navy Illusion Sleeve Sheath Dress. Keep jewelry to 1 or 2 pieces.
