Italian Wedding Guest Dresses: What to Wear to a Wedding in Italy

Black sleeveless maxi dress with cyclamen, purple, and green embroidered flowers, worn in a stone arcade with columns and lanterns

An Italian wedding guest dress has to carry a woman from an afternoon church ceremony to dancing after midnight, through heat that can pass 30 degrees Celsius (86 F). The dress that works at a wedding in Italy is a lined midi or maxi in a fabric that breathes. It needs a way to cover the shoulders in church and a color nobody could confuse with the bride’s.

Luna Fashion House is a European house whose tailoring takes its inspiration from Italy. Every piece is cut in our atelier in Pozarevac, Serbia, where we have made occasion dresses since 1990.

What an Italian wedding asks of a guest

An Italian wedding asks a guest to look composed for most of a day and half of a night. The ceremony usually starts in the afternoon and the aperitivo follows in a garden. Dinner often starts at 9 pm or later, and the dancing comes after it.

Heat and stone shape most of the choices. Summer afternoons in the south are hot, so the cloth has to breathe and a lining has to stop it clinging. Old towns are built on steps and cobbles. An Italian invitation prints a start time and no finish time, which is the most accurate line on the card.

If you want 1 dress for the whole day, choose a lined midi with a defined waist. The Amanda floral midi is sleeveless, with a draped cowl neckline and a buckled belt. Watercolor flowers in coral, pink, and orange cover its cream ground. It is cut from a breathable botanical fiber, fully lined, with the hem at mid-calf. Bring a light layer for the church.

Italian wedding venues and what each one wants

The venue tells an Italian wedding guest more about the dress than the invitation does.

Sicily and the south

Sicilian weddings tend to be hot, and dinner is often outdoors and late, in a light where strong color looks right. The Rina cyclamen floral maxi has cyclamen and purple flowers embroidered on a sheer black ground over a lining. The neckline is round, and the A-line skirt falls to the ankle bone. Carry a shawl for the church.

The Amalfi Coast and Capri

An Amalfi Coast wedding involves a lot of staircases, and a midi that clears the ankle is easier on them than a maxi. The Julia floral midi has short sleeves, a draped neckline, and a black belt with a round buckle. The ivory floral bodice shades into a navy skirt with roses at the hem, and the dark skirt hides the dust from the steps.

Lake Como

A Lake Como wedding usually runs more formal than a coastal one, with villas, boats between venues, and dinners that lean toward black tie optional. The water cools the evening quickly in September and October, so choose navy or a deep color such as forest green and bring a coat for the boat.

A Tuscany villa

A Tuscan villa wedding happens on lawns and gravel among the vines, and the hills cool down after sunset. The Iris A-line midi in blush floral covers the church and the cooler night. It has a high mock neck, long sleeves, and a belt. A charcoal and rose lily print covers a cream and blush ground, and the uneven hem reaches mid-calf at its longest points.

A masseria in Puglia

A masseria is a farm estate in Puglia, often fortified, with white stone courtyards and olive groves around it. White walls can make a pale dress disappear in photographs. A dark floral or red looks intended there, so the Rina maxis work in Puglia as well as in Sicily.

A city wedding in Rome or Milan

A city wedding in Rome or Milan is the most tailored of the Italian weddings, with a city church and dinner in a palazzo or hotel. The Olga navy dress fits that room. It has a notched collar, cap sleeves, and gold tone buttons down the wrap front. The belt has a gold buckle, and the hem sits at the kneecap.

Fabrics that survive 30 degrees Celsius and a 10 pm dinner

The fabrics that survive an Italian summer wedding are breathable fibers with a lining. A lining is the second layer of cloth sewn inside a dress, and in the heat it keeps the outer fabric from clinging. The Iris A-line midi is 84% viscose with 6% elastane, lined in viscose. The Rina maxis put embroidered mesh over a lining. A little elastane, like the 5% in the Iris off-shoulder cocktail dress, gets a fitted dress through 4 courses. The Italian coastal wedding guide goes further into fabrics for humidity and boat transfers.

Color at an Italian wedding: white, red, navy, and floral

At an Italian wedding, white, ivory, and cream belong to the bride, so leave at home any dress that reads pale from the back of a church. A print on a cream ground is fine when the color covers most of it, as on the Amanda and Julia midis. Champagne and gold suit the dinner, where candlelight turns them warm.

Red works well at an Italian wedding. It photographs well against old stone and sea, and nobody will confuse it with the bride. The Rina red floral maxi carries red as embroidered flowers on a black ground, so the color reads clearly without covering the whole dress.

Navy works in a church at 4 pm and at a palazzo at midnight. A dense floral looks festive from across a piazza. Plain black can read somber at a summer ceremony in daylight. Black with color worked into it, like the Rina embroidery, belongs at an evening reception.

Length and the church

A midi is the right length for most Italian weddings, and a maxi suits an evening reception. Many Catholic churches in Italy expect covered shoulders, so a sleeveless or off-shoulder dress needs a layer for the ceremony.

Measure the maxi against the steps. On our model, the Rina cyclamen falls to the ankle bone. The Rina red floral sits about 4 to 5 inches above the ankle bone at the front, which makes it the easier of the 2 on a staircase in Positano.

Shoes and the steps

The right shoe for an Italian wedding is a block heel of about 2 inches or a flat sandal, with spare flats in the bag. Stiletto heels catch between cobbles and sink into villa lawns, and a new leather sole slips on a marble church floor.

The evening layer: a light coat for the lake wedding in October

For a lake wedding in September or October, the evening layer is a light coat. We would pack the Emma light coat in teal floral jacquard. It is woven in a black jacquard with teal flowers and metallic threads, with a shirt collar, hidden press buttons, and a tie belt. The Emma ends at the kneecap and covers the Olga navy dress completely, while a midi shows a few inches below it. The Emma is dry clean only.

The Italian wedding guest in her 30s, 40s, and 50s

In your 30s, the Italian wedding is often a friend’s, with a long night of dancing. It may be your first wedding as a married woman, or the one where you are the only single guest at your table. The Iris off-shoulder cocktail dress in champagne gold has a pleated off-shoulder neckline, a waistband set with pearl-like accents, and a hem at the knee. It reads warm gold under evening light. Our guide to wedding guest dresses for women in their 30s covers the other weddings of that decade.

In your 40s, the Italian wedding may come with children, a rental car, and a seat next to someone’s grandmother. The Julia floral midi handles a lap and a staircase, and you can loosen the belt after the third course. For the full decade, read our guide to wedding guest dresses for women over 40.

In your 50s, you may be a friend of the bride’s mother who flies in for the whole week. The Iris A-line midi gives you long sleeves for the church and a belt for the waist. Our wedding guest dress guide for women over 50 goes through every dress code.

Packing a wedding guest dress in a carry-on

Every dress in this guide is machine washable on a gentle cycle and can be steamed or ironed on low, so it travels in a carry-on. Roll it in tissue paper on top of the bag and hang it in the hotel bathroom on arrival. Wear the coat on the plane. Our guide to what to wear in Italy in summer covers the rest of the suitcase. Our piece on 7 quiet ways European women dress differently covers the habits behind a small wardrobe.

The 2027 wedding season in Italy

A destination wedding in Italy in 2027 often runs over 3 events: a welcome dinner, the wedding day, and a lunch the day after. Plan the Olga for the dinner and a Rina maxi or the Iris champagne dress for the wedding. The Amanda takes the lunch in the sun, and the Emma coat goes over 2 of them.

Frequently asked questions

What should a female guest wear to an Italian wedding?

A female guest at an Italian wedding wears a lined midi or maxi dress in a breathable fabric and a color that is clearly not white. She also needs a way to cover her shoulders in church. Navy, red, and floral prints all work. Add block heels for the stone steps and a light layer for the evening. The Amanda floral midi and the Rina floral maxi from Luna Fashion House are 2 pieces we would pack.

Can you wear white or ivory to a wedding in Italy?

A guest should not wear white or ivory to a wedding in Italy, since white, ivory, and cream belong to the bride. A dense floral on a cream ground is fine when the color covers most of the dress. Champagne and gold belong to the evening dinner, where candlelight makes them read as gold.

Do you need to cover your shoulders at an Italian church wedding?

Most church weddings in Italy call for covered shoulders, since many Catholic churches there expect them. Bring a light coat or a shawl for the ceremony and take it off for the aperitivo. A dress with sleeves, such as the Iris A-line midi, avoids the question.

What should I wear to a Lake Como wedding in September or October?

A Lake Como wedding in September or October is warm in the afternoon and cool on the water at night. Choose a midi or knee length dress in navy or a dark floral, and bring a light coat for the boat. The Emma light coat in teal floral jacquard covers the knee length Olga navy dress completely.

Is red appropriate for an Italian wedding guest?

Red is one of the clearest colors a guest can wear to an Italian wedding. It photographs well against old stone and sea, and nobody will mistake it for the bride. Keep the shoes and bag plain. The Rina red floral maxi carries red as embroidered flowers on a black ground, which suits an evening wedding in the south.

How do I pack a wedding guest dress in a carry-on for Italy?

Pack a wedding guest dress rolled in tissue paper on top of the carry-on, and hang it in the hotel bathroom when you arrive. Every Luna dress is machine washable on a gentle cycle and can be steamed or ironed on low before the ceremony. Wear the coat on the plane to keep it out of the suitcase. Luna coats are dry clean only.
