The Off-Shoulder Gown: A Story for the Night She Stands Still
The Off-Shoulder Gown: A Story for the Night She Stands Still
The off-shoulder gown is for the woman who owns a room by standing still in it. She is 46, on the host committee of a November gala, and for once she is not organizing anyone. She wants the photograph she keeps to show her collarbone, her posture, and her ease, and nothing tugging, slipping, or shining harder than she does.
This is the story of that neckline and of the four dresses that carry it at Luna: the Navy Off-Shoulder Maxi Gown, Iris, its anthracite sister, a bordeaux gown with a slit, and a navy midi for the nights when the card says black tie optional.

Why the off-shoulder line works at 30 and at 60
Most necklines age with the body. The off-shoulder line does not, because it frames the two things that stay: the collarbone and the top of the shoulder. The band sits on the upper arm, so the arm is framed rather than bared, and the eye is drawn up and across, to the face, not down. In 35 years of fittings it is the neckline that women who have not worn a gown in a decade choose, and the one they keep.
What makes it work is what holds it there. A pleated or folded band with a structured bodice under it stays put through a seated dinner and a dance floor. A stretch band on an unstructured dress does not, which is why so many women remember an off-shoulder dress as the one they spent the night pulling up.
8:10 p.m., the navy gown
She arrives in the Navy Off-Shoulder Maxi Gown, Iris. The band is pleated and folds across the top of the arm into a soft sweetheart center; the waist is marked by a semi-sheer band with fine rows of tonal beadwork that only catch light at close range; the skirt is full from the waist and falls to the floor with a low, liquid metallic sheen. In the ballroom it reads as navy. Under the candles on the table it reads as something alive.

She knows the dress will hold because of how it is built: a shell of 97 percent polyester and 3 percent elastane over a smooth lining, the band and the waist both pleated so they keep their shape, and a row of covered buttons down the back that closes the bodice into the waist. Fit is true to size; between sizes, take the smaller for a closer bodice or the larger for ease through the waist. Sizes 4 through 10 are made.

What she does not do is compete with it. One metal, silver or platinum. A single sapphire or crystal piece. Navy heels. For the coat over it on a cold night, read what to wear over an evening gown.
The anthracite sister, for the woman who wears black
For the woman whose evening wardrobe is black, the Gray Off-Shoulder Maxi Gown, Iris, is the same gown in a controlled anthracite metallic. It reads close to black in flat daylight and softens to a warm shimmer under lamps and candles, with small dark crystals set across the tiered sheer band at the waist. It gives her the gravity of black without the flatness of it, which is exactly what a camera needs at night. Sizes 2 through 12 are made.

For the choice between the two, navy or black for evening is the longer answer. The short one: navy if you want color, anthracite if you want depth.
The bordeaux gown, for the warm palette
If her jewelry is gold and her coloring is warm, the gown is the Burgundy Off-Shoulder Metallic Gown, Alis. The band is folded rather than pleated and meets in a V at the center; the bodice is sculpted close through the waist and hip; the skirt releases into a fishtail with a front slit, in a bordeaux metallic worked in fine vertical pleats that catch light along the length of the gown. It is the dress for the woman who wants a fitted line and needs to walk, sit, and climb a staircase in it. The slit is why she can.

The Alis closes with a center-back zipper, over a viscose and elastane lining, and is true to size through the bodice and hip. Sizes 4 and 6 are in stock this season.
When the card says black tie optional
Not every night is floor length. For black tie optional, a cocktail wedding, or a dinner where a gown would be too much, the same neckline comes as a midi: the Navy Off-Shoulder Dress, Greta. The band sits straight across the top of the arm, the bodice is fitted with two rows of buttons, a belt with a square buckle marks the waist, there are pockets, and the skirt is full to mid-calf. A narrow striped tie at the neck holds the line and bows at the nape. It is formal by silhouette rather than by shine, and she can wear it to the office holiday dinner in December and to a June wedding.

And for the card that says cocktail, the Gray Off-Shoulder Cocktail Dress, Iris, is the Iris gown cut to the knee: the same pleated band and crystal-set waist over a fitted skirt with soft ruching at one hip, in the same anthracite metallic. Sizes 2, 4, and 6 are in stock. The Greta is made in sizes 4 through 10 and is true to size, with the band sitting at the top of the bicep on most builds.

Before you decide
Every gown is cut and constructed in our own atelier in Pozarevac, Serbia, in a small run, a few of each size, and we do not reorder mid-season. Orders ship from California, shipping in the US is free, and returns are accepted for 30 days without questions. If you are between sizes, order both and keep the one that holds.
The rational case. A gown with a structured bodice is a gown you wear to the next gala and the wedding after it, and these are machine washable on a gentle cycle, air dried, and steamed on low, so there is no cleaner between one night and the next. At $770 the Iris is bought once and worn for years, which is the only arithmetic that matters for a gown. For the jewelry and the shoes, how to accessorize an evening gown finishes the look.
Frequently asked questions
Is an off-shoulder gown appropriate for a woman over 40 or over 50?
Yes, and it is one of the necklines that ages best. It shows the collarbone and the top of the shoulder, which stay the same across the decades, and the band sits at the top of the upper arm, so the arm is framed, not bared. The Iris gowns hold the band in place with a structured bodice, so you are not tugging it back up at 11 p.m.
Navy or anthracite: which off-shoulder gown should I choose?
Navy if you want color that reads as color under candlelight and photographs with warmth; the Navy Off-Shoulder Maxi Gown, Iris, has a low liquid sheen. Anthracite if you want the gravity of black without its flatness; the Gray Off-Shoulder Maxi Gown, Iris, reads close to black in daylight and softens to a warm shimmer under lamps. Navy is made in sizes 4 to 10, anthracite in 2 to 12.
What does the Alis bordeaux gown do that the Iris does not?
It fits close through the hip before it flares. The Burgundy Off-Shoulder Metallic Gown, Alis, has a folded off-shoulder band, a sculpted bodice, a front slit, and a fishtail hem in finely pleated bordeaux metallic. It is the warm-toned gown for a woman with gold jewelry, and the slit is what lets her walk and sit in a fitted skirt.
What do I wear to a black tie optional event if I do not want a floor-length gown?
The Navy Off-Shoulder Dress, Greta, a navy off-shoulder midi with a fitted, buttoned bodice, a belt with a square buckle, pockets, and a full skirt to mid-calf. It is formal by silhouette rather than shine, and it is correct wherever the card says black tie optional or cocktail.
How should an off-shoulder gown fit, and which size should I take?
True to size through the bodice and natural waist for all four. The Iris gowns close with a row of covered buttons at the back; the Alis with a center-back zipper. Between sizes, take the smaller for a closer bodice line or the larger for more ease. Returns are accepted for 30 days without questions, so order the two sizes if you are unsure and keep the one that holds.
Can an evening gown be machine washed?
These can. The Iris gowns, the Alis, and the Greta are machine washable on a gentle cycle, air dried, and steamed or ironed on low. Do not bleach. Hang each on a broad padded hanger to protect the off-shoulder band and the line of the skirt. No cleaner, no solvent, no waiting a week to see if the shine survived.
Choose the night, then the color. The Navy Off-Shoulder Maxi Gown, Iris and its sisters are in Evening Dresses, complete size runs listed first, and the Greta is in Wedding Guest Dresses and Jumpsuits.
