The Dress That Solves It: Silhouettes by Concern, Not by Fruit

Navy off shoulder gown at an evening dinner

She sits down at 8 in the morning and stands up at 6, and in between there is a lunch, a stage, and a car. A dress that photographs well standing and pulls when she sits is a dress for a reception. The dress that solves a day is the one she forgets she is wearing by 10.

The dress charts sort women into fruit and hand each fruit 1 silhouette. The fitting room does not. It asks what you want the dress to solve, where you will wear it, what will go over it, and what will be on your feet, and then it reaches for the cut that answers all 4. A woman with a soft middle and long legs and a woman with a full bust and a short waist may both be called an apple by a chart; they should not be handed the same dress.

This guide is organized the way that conversation goes: 6 concerns first, each with the cut and the detail that answers it, then the silhouettes Luna makes one by one, then what goes over each, then a table of which dress for which day. Every dress is photographed on a real woman, and every one is machine washable on a gentle cycle, which matters more than the charts think.

“I don't usually wear fitted dresses, but this one felt supportive, not restrictive.”

a customer, in a review of the Lucy sheath on lunafashionhouse.com, December 2025

6 concerns, and the cut that answers each

The middle. What women say in the fitting room is “it is all in the middle now.” What works is never a tent and never cling. It is a dress that defines the body above or below the fullest point rather than on it: a waist seam that sits a fraction high with a skirt that falls from it, a wrap that crosses the midsection on the diagonal, or ruching that gathers cloth over the stomach so no single line lands there. Fabric with body, a lining, and a print all help; thin jersey does not.

The hips and thighs. An A line or a fit and flare: fitted through the bodice, then a skirt that skims from the waist so the hip is never measured by the eye. Pleats and a belt at the natural waist send the attention up. A pencil skirt in a firm cloth with a lining works if it skims; a bias cut in thin satin does not.

The arms. A sleeve that ends at the narrowest point, which for most women is just below the elbow or at the wrist; a sheer illusion sleeve that covers without weight; a lace sleeve; a cape sleeve that falls from the shoulder and moves. A tight cap sleeve that cuts the upper arm in half is the one to avoid.

The bust. A V or a wrap to break the chest into 2 verticals, a square neck to frame it, a waist seam under the bust to hold it, and bust darts so the cloth curves rather than pulls. A strapless bodice needs boning and a fitting; a high gathered neck turns the chest into a block.

Short legs, or a petite frame. A knee length sheath with a high waist seam, or a fit and flare that ends at the knee, both with a pointed shoe. A midi must end at the slimmest part of the calf and never at the widest. Vertical seams, 1 color, and a belt tied high all buy inches.

Tall. The vertical canvas takes a column, a midi, a gown to the floor, and an off shoulder line that a shorter frame cannot carry. The only rule is that a long hem grazes the shoe and does not pool.

The silhouettes we cut

The sheath

A sheath follows the body from shoulder to hem in a slim, straight line with a defined but not exaggerated waist. In a firm cloth with darts it is the office, the client dinner, and the funeral, and with ruching or lace it is the cocktail hour. It suits an hourglass, a straight figure, a petite woman who needs 1 vertical line, and, cut with a slightly raised waist in a cloth with body, a soft middle too. A blazer sits over it perfectly; a coat should end at or below its hem.

The Olga is a navy sheath with a wrap front, a collar, cap sleeves, and a belt with a gold tone buckle, cut to the knee, the dress a woman wears to lead a meeting. The Lucy sheath in navy adds a collar and sheer illusion sleeves for a courtroom or a stage. The Dora is a black cap sleeve sheath with an embellished waist for the dinner after the meeting.

Burgundy Lace Cocktail Dress, Jody by Luna Fashion House
Burgundy Lace Cocktail Dress, JodySee all dresses

The Jody lace cocktail dress in bordeaux is a knee length sheath with a round neck and short lace sleeves, the cocktail dress that covers the arms; it comes in midnight green with an illusion neck and in ivory. For a middle that wants forgiving, the Morgan and the Iris off shoulder cocktail dress gather the cloth in ruching so the eye finds no line to rest on.

The fit and flare, and the A line

Fitted through the bust and waist, then a skirt that flares from the waist. This is the most forgiving cut we make, because it defines the smallest point and skims everything below it. It suits an hourglass, a pear, and a straight figure that would like a waist; with the seam a fraction high it suits a soft middle. Petite women take it to the knee or to a midi that ends at the slimmest calf; tall women take the midi freely. It is the wedding guest, the mother of the bride, the christening, the holiday party, and the office in a plain cloth with sleeves.

Pink Floral A-Line Midi Dress, Iris by Luna Fashion House

The Iris A line midi in blush floral has a high round neck, long sleeves, and a belt, the daytime wedding dress for a woman who wants her arms covered and her waist found. The Lucy jacquard midi in midnight blue has a V neck and sheer 3/4 sleeves over an A line skirt in a woven pattern that smooths the middle; it is the fall wedding and the November board dinner.

Navy Off-Shoulder Dress, Greta by Luna Fashion House
Navy Off-Shoulder Dress, GretaSee all dresses

The Greta in navy is the off shoulder fit and flare with buttons, a wide belt, pockets, and an A line midi skirt; the belt sits at the natural waist and the skirt takes care of the hips. The Rina midi in black does the same with a square neck and short sleeves, for the office. The Melissa in white polka dot, with a halter strap and a flared midi skirt, is the summer wedding guest.

The wrap

A true wrap crosses at the front and ties or buckles at the waist, so the V does the neck and the bust, the diagonal does the middle, and the tie lets you set the waist where it belongs on you rather than where a seam was sewn. It suits an hourglass first, a pear, a full bust, and a soft middle in a fluid cloth. Knee length or a high midi on a petite frame, longer on a tall one.

Floral Print Maxi Dress, Lola by Luna Fashion House
Floral Print Maxi Dress, LolaSee all dresses

The Lola is a brown floral wrap dress with a V neck, cap sleeves, and a side slit, cut long, the dress for a long lunch, a resort dinner, or a garden wedding. The Olga above is the wrap as a knee length sheath for the office.

The column and the gown

A column falls straight from the shoulder or the bust to the floor with no waist seam to interrupt it. It is the black tie silhouette, the gala, the winter wedding after dark, and it belongs to a tall frame and to any woman who wants the evening to read her as 1 unbroken line. Off the shoulder, it lengthens the neck and balances full hips; with a slit, it walks and dances. Over it goes a cape or a light jacquard coat, never a blazer.

Navy Off-Shoulder Maxi Gown, Iris by Luna Fashion House
Navy Off-Shoulder Maxi Gown, IrisSee all dresses

The Iris gown in navy metallic falls off the shoulder to the floor; it comes in anthracite as well. The Alis in bordeaux adds a slit. The Bruna is a beige lace gown, sleeveless, with a V, for a mother of the bride who wants lace and length. The Greta long dress sets a turquoise sequin bodice with cap sleeves over a black floor length skirt for the gala.

The cape sleeve dress

A sheer cape that falls from the shoulder covers the upper arm without touching it, moves when you do, and turns a plain V neck sheath into an evening. It is the answer for a woman who wants her arms covered at a summer wedding without a shawl she will lose by the second dance.

Black Short Dress, Rebeka by Luna Fashion House

The Rebeka short dress in black is a V neck knee length sheath with sheer cape sleeves; the long Rebeka in ivory and in plum carry the same idea to the floor for a black tie wedding or a gala.

The corset and the strapless

A boned bodice holds and shapes, and so a strapless dress on a woman over 40 needs construction rather than luck. It suits a small to medium bust and a straight or hourglass figure, and it is a party dress: a 50th birthday, a New Year, a summer wedding reception. A cropped blazer or a cape over it makes the ceremony version.

Beige Short Corset Dress, Melisa by Luna Fashion House

The Melisa corset dress in beige is strapless, fitted through a boned bodice, and flares above the knee. The Lesli takes the same evening to a square neck with spaghetti straps and a draped skirt.

What goes over it

A blazer. Over a sheath, a tailored blazer with the hem at the dress waist or the upper hip. Over a fit and flare or an A line, a cropped or collarless blazer that ends at the waist so the skirt moves; the Lola is cut for exactly that. Over a wrap, a collarless jacket so the 2 necklines do not argue. Over a gown, no blazer.

A coat. Over a knee length dress, a coat that ends at or up to 2 inches below the hem, or a midi coat that swallows it into 1 column. Over a midi dress, a knee coat that is clearly shorter or a midi coat that is equal or an inch longer. Over a gown, a coat equal to or 1 to 3 inches longer, never 6. The Nicole wrap coat covers most of these; the Emma light jacquard coat is the dress coat for an evening.

A cape. Over a gown, a fit and flare, or a strapless dress, the Selina cape leaves the arms free and the neckline visible and takes off in 1 movement at the coat check.

The dress in inches: ease, lining, and the 3 tests

Ease. A sheath fits when there is 1 inch of ease at the hip, 1/2 to 1 inch at the bust, and 1/2 inch at the waist: pinch the cloth at the side of the hip and you should hold 1/2 inch of it between your fingers. Less and the dress reports every seam beneath it and pulls into horizontal lines across the thigh when you sit; more and it reads as a size too big. An A line or a fit and flare needs the ease only at the bust and the waist; the skirt supplies its own. A wrap needs 2 inches of overlap at the thigh when you stand, or it opens when you walk.

The sit test. Sit with your knees together and your back straight. The hem rides up 2 to 3 inches, no more; the front does not fold into a lap of cloth; nothing binds at the back waist. Then reach across the table: no pull from the armhole to the bust. A dress that passes standing and fails seated is a dress for a reception, not for a 9 hour day.

The lining. A lined dress falls in a line, skims rather than clings, does not ride up on tights, and holds its shape after washing. You can see a lining in a photograph: the cloth falls in 1 plane with no ripple at the hip, the hem hangs straight without a wave, and the light shows no shadow of the leg through the skirt. Ask about the lining before you ask about the fiber; the product page says when a dress is lined. The light chiffons and the lace over a slip are cut for a room, not a corridor.

The seam. A vertical seam down the center front or a princess seam through the bust adds length to every body and gives a tailor the place to take the dress in by 1 inch a side for $35 to $70. A dress without vertical seams can be taken in only at the sides, and only 1/2 inch each. A darted bust can be let out by 1/4 inch and no more, and so a dress is bought for the bust and altered at the waist and the hem.

The underpinnings. Under a sheath, a smooth T shirt bra with a wide band and a lined dress, and nothing else is needed; a slip belongs under an unlined dress and ends 2 inches above its hem. Under a V or a wrap, the bra must sit 1 inch below the neckline when you lean. Under an off shoulder or a strapless, a strapless with a wide band, and a bodice with boning so that the dress, not the bra, does the holding. Under a sheer sleeve, any bra, as long as the strap sits inside the opaque bodice.

The questions women ask before they invest

How fitted should a sheath be for the office? 1 inch of ease at the hip and no horizontal line across the thigh seated. If you have to tug it down when you stand, it is too tight; if it folds at the lap, too loose. The Olga and the Lucy illusion sheath are cut to this.

Are fit and flare dresses serious enough for a client meeting? Yes, at the knee or the midi in a matte cloth with a sleeve, worn with a pointed pump; the Charlotte with a 3/4 sleeve and a belt is a client lunch. In a chiffon or with a ruffle, no.

How do I find a lined dress that does not cling to tights? Look for the lining in the photograph: a hem that hangs straight, no ripple at the hip. Wear a sheer hose rather than an opaque tight in the office; opaques grip everything.

Sheath or shift? A sheath follows the waist and needs the waist to be the narrowest inch; a shift hangs straight from the shoulder and does not. A full midsection chooses the shift or the column; an hourglass chooses the sheath.

Best dress for a board presentation or a keynote? A knee length sheath or a wrap with a collar, a sleeve, and 1 color from the neck to the knee; navy, midnight, or black; nothing that moves when you gesture. The Lucy illusion sheath in navy and the Olga wrap are the 2 we send to a stage.

Can a wrap dress look tailored enough for law or finance? Yes, if it has a collar, a fixed waist, and a skirt to the knee, as the Olga does; a jersey wrap that ties, no.

The same black dress for a funeral and the office? Yes: a black or midnight sheath with a sleeve and a collar. For the funeral, the illusion long sleeve or the short lace sleeve, closed pumps, no jewelry but a watch; for the office, the same dress with a belt and a colored blazer.

Are sleeveless dresses appropriate for a senior woman? With a jacket or a cardigan in the room, yes, on any woman. Without one, only where the room is warm and the dress code is social.

How do I choose a gala dress after 50? A sleeve or an illusion sleeve, a neckline no deeper than 4 inches or an off shoulder, a floor hem set in the shoe, 1 metallic or 1 color, no more, and the coat over it chosen before the dress is bought. The Alis and the Iris gowns and the Bruna lace gown are the Luna answers.

Is a $600 dress worth it? A lined dress in a matte cloth that fits at the hip and passes the sit test is worn 20 times a year for 5 years; that is $6 a wearing. A $150 dress that pulls seated is worn twice. Buy the one you can sit in.

Frequently asked questions

What dress style hides a tummy? No dress should hide you; the right one defines you above or below the middle instead of on it. A fit and flare with the waist seam a fraction high, a wrap that crosses on the diagonal, or a ruched sheath in a cloth with body. Avoid thin jersey and a straight tunic that ends at the belly.

What is the most flattering dress for a pear shape? A fit and flare or an A line: fitted at the bust and waist, then a skirt that skims from the waist. Pleats, a belt, and detail at the neckline send the eye up. The Greta, the Lucy jacquard midi, and the Iris A line midi are the Luna examples.

Sheath or shift? A sheath follows the body with a defined waist; a shift hangs straight from the shoulder. For a woman over 40 who wants the office to take her seriously, the sheath in a firm cloth with darts is the more forgiving of the 2, because it gives a waist rather than hiding one.

Which dress length for a petite woman? The knee, or a midi that ends at the slimmest part of the calf, never the widest. A high waist seam, 1 color, and a pointed shoe buy the rest.

Can I wear a strapless dress over 40? Yes, if the bodice is boned and fitted and the day is a party rather than a ceremony. Put a cropped blazer or a cape over it for the vows and take it off for the dancing.

Are Luna dresses machine washable? Yes. Every dress washes on a gentle cycle, dries flat or on a hanger, and takes a steam or a low iron. Coats are the only pieces we ask you to dry clean.
