What to Wear to the Kentucky Derby or a Race Day

A woman wearing the Luna Julia Navy White Floral Midi Dress

For the Kentucky Derby or any race day, wear a midi dress or a tailored pantsuit in a spring color or a print. Add a hat or a fascinator if you like, and a block heel or a wedge for the grass. Luna’s own page for the Julia Elegant Midi Dress ($695) names a Derby luncheon as one of its occasions. Its white bodice shades into a navy skirt with a floral border. It has short sleeves, a wide belt, and a midi hem 46 inches from the back of the neck on a size 2.

What the race day dress code means

The Kentucky Derby runs at Churchill Downs in Louisville on the first Saturday in May. Your ticket sets the dress code. Upscale spring attire is expected in the grandstand and the boxes. The clubs and suites publish written codes that rule out items such as denim, shorts and athletic wear. The infield is the most relaxed part of the track.

Churchill Downs also posts a bag size limit for Derby week on its website. Check it before you choose a bag.

A club race day, a polo match or a spring meet at another track calls for the same level as the grandstand. Wear a day dress or a pantsuit and shoes you can stand in for 6 hours. Spring colors, florals and navy with white all suit daylight. All black can look too formal for a daytime race.

Hats are a tradition and not a rule. If you plan to wear one, choose it first, then repeat a color from it in the dress, the bag or the shoes.

What to wear

The dress for the lawn

For a day on the lawn, wear the Julia. Its flared midi skirt clears the turf. A navy hem also hides a splash from a damp lawn better than a pale one.

Pantsuits and blazers

  • The Alexa Tailored Blazer in White ($610) is optical white, with 4 covered buttons, flap pockets and long sleeves. It goes over the Julia on a cool morning.
  • The Agatha High Waisted Wide Leg Pants in Ivory ($595) have a high waist, a pressed front crease, side pockets and a self belt with a metal buckle. Luna pairs them with the white Alexa for a light, tonal cream and white look.
  • The Alexa Tailored Blazer in Navy ($610) has 3/4 sleeves, notched lapels and 4 covered buttons. Navy over cream is a safe choice if you wear pants.
  • For a fall meet or a cold spring morning, wear the Elena Houndstooth Tailored Trousers ($580). They are straight leg suit pants in fine black and white houndstooth, with a red belt.

The jumpsuit for a box or a suite

The Tina Jumpsuit in Yellow ($695) is a floor length wide leg jumpsuit with a detachable ombre upper layer and a belted waist. Wear it where the floor is hard: a box, a suite, a club dining room or a party after the races. On the lawn a floor length hem collects grass. Choose the Julia for a day outdoors.

What to avoid

Leave thin stilettos and brand new shoes at home. Keep a floor length hem off the lawn. A large tote may not pass the bag check. In a club or a suite, read the written code before you count on a jumpsuit or pants.

Shoes and layers

Wear a wide heel and carry flats for the walk to the car. The Derby runs rain or shine. Pack a clear poncho that will not hide the outfit. Wear a blazer for the cool Kentucky morning and take it off when the afternoon warms up.

A short checklist

  • Find the dress code and the bag rule for your ticket area.
  • Choose a midi hem for the lawn, and save the floor length jumpsuit for a box or a suite.
  • Pick the hat first and repeat a color from it.
  • Wear a heel wide enough for turf and carry flats.
  • Bring a blazer for the morning and a clear poncho for rain.

Questions about the Derby and race day

What should a woman wear to the Kentucky Derby?

Wear a midi dress or a tailored pantsuit in a spring color or a print. Add a hat if you like, and wear a wide heel you can walk in. Your ticket area decides how dressed up to be, and the clubs and suites publish their own codes.

Do I need a hat at the Kentucky Derby?

Many women wear one, but nobody requires it. You will not be turned away without one. If you wear one, choose it before the outfit and pin it for a long day outdoors.

What shoes work on grass at a polo match or race day?

Choose an espadrille, a wedge, a low block heel or a dressy flat. Thin heels sink into turf. You will walk a lot, so pack a flat pair.

Can I wear pants to the Kentucky Derby?

You can. Tailored pants with a blazer, or a dressy jumpsuit, are usually fine in the grandstand and the boxes. Check the written code for a club or a suite.

What does smart casual mean at a country club for women?

If your race day is at a country club, smart casual usually means a dress or a skirt at the knee or longer, or tailored pants with a blouse or a blazer. Denim and athletic wear are out. Every club writes its own policy, so ask the member who invited you.

Does Luna ship free, and can I return a piece?
