The Neckline Decides: Neck, Shoulders, Bust, Then Face
A client dinner, the table set for 8, and she leans across it to sign the check. That is the whole test of a neckline: what shows when she leans, what the collar does to her jaw when she turns to speak, and whether the necklace lands on skin or on cloth. The room reads that zone before it reads anything else.
The neckline decides more than any other line on a garment, because about 80% of the attention a person gives you lands in the small zone between your collarbone and your face. The charts you have saved sort necklines by face shape. In the fitting room we sort them by 3 things you can measure before we ever look at the face: the length of your neck, the width of your shoulders, and the fullness of your bust. Face shape comes fourth, and it settles ties.
This guide takes the necklines we cut, one by one, and says who each one agrees with, what it does to the neck and the chest, which necklace length and hairstyle finish it, and which day it belongs to. Every photograph is a real Luna dress, blouse, or blazer. If you read nothing else, read the 2 finger rule and the section on the bust; between them they solve most of the fitting room.

“The off-shoulder neckline is very elegant and frames the shoulders beautifully.”
3 lines before the face
Neck length. A short neck wants open necklines that start at or below the collarbone: a V, a soft scoop, an open shirt collar, a wrap. A tight crew, a high mock neck, and a heavy turtleneck crowd the chin and shorten the neck further. A long neck can wear the opposite: a crew, a boat, a mock neck, a mandarin collar, a shirt buttoned high, all of which read elegant on length.
Shoulders. Every neckline is a line drawn across you. A vertical opening, a V or a wrap, narrows the shoulders; a horizontal opening, a boat, a square, an off shoulder, widens them. Broad shoulders therefore take the V and the wrap and leave the boat and the off shoulder for another woman. Narrow or sloping shoulders take the boat, the square, the off shoulder, and the 1 shoulder, which give them width and a straighter line.
Bust. A full bust needs length and a break in the volume: a V, a wrap, a soft square, a scoop that is not too wide. A tight crew, a boat with embellishment, and a high gathered neckline turn the chest into 1 block. A smaller bust can carry what the full bust cannot: a crew, a turtleneck, a boat, a cowl, a lace or beaded yoke, detail of every kind.
The 2 finger rule. An open neckline is at its most flattering when it starts about 2 fingers below the collarbone. Higher and it crowds; lower and, past 40, it exposes the chest that catches the light. Most of the necklines below are cut to that depth.
The necklines we cut, and who each one agrees with
The V and the wrap
The V is the neckline that lengthens the neck, narrows the shoulders, and breaks up a full bust in 1 stroke, and so stylists who dress women over 50 call it the first neckline to try. The wrap does the same with a diagonal, and adds a waist. Best for a short neck, broad shoulders, a full bust, a round or square face. The necklace is a princess length, 16 to 18 inches, with a pendant that echoes the V; hair up or a bob for the boardroom, soft waves for an evening.

The Olga is a navy wrap dress with a collar, cap sleeves, gold tone buttons, and a belt with a gold tone buckle, cut to the knee as a sheath: the wrap V with a collar to frame it, which is the boardroom version. For evening, the Rebeka is a black V neck knee dress with sheer cape sleeves, and the Lola is a V neck wrap dress in a brown floral with cap sleeves and a side slit for a long lunch. Under a blazer, the Jody blouse in midnight green has a V with a lace yoke and 3/4 sleeves.

The round neck and the crew neck
A round neck sits higher and closer. It suits a long neck, a small to medium bust, and a long face, which it balances. Past 50 the round neck should skim rather than grip: a fraction lower than a true crew, so the collarbone still shows. If your bust is full or your neck short, wear the round neck open at the throat with a blazer, or move to the V. Necklace: a choker on the fabric, or a long matinee strand to draw a vertical line. Hair: a bob or an updo shows the line; long hair down covers it.

The Iris A line midi in blush floral has a high round neck, long sleeves, and a belt, the daytime wedding and the christening dress for a woman with a long neck. The Jody lace cocktail dress in bordeaux has a softer round neck and short sleeves in lace, knee length, and is the dinner version.
The square neck
A square neck frames the chest with a horizontal line and an open center, so it gives coverage without a block. It suits a full bust that wants containing without a matronly look, narrow shoulders that welcome width, and a heart or oval face. On a square jaw choose a soft square, not a sharp one. Necklace: a short pendant just inside the square, or nothing; the corners are the jewelry. Hair: a bob or a lob shows the line.

The Rina midi in black has a square neck, short sleeves, and an A line skirt, the office dress that goes to dinner. The Lesli takes the square neck to an evening with spaghetti straps and a draped beige skirt above the knee.
The boat neck
A boat neck runs straight across from collarbone to collarbone. It widens narrow or sloping shoulders, covers the throat while showing the collarbones, and, as more than one stylist has noted, it is the neckline that ages best because it hides what a low neckline shows. Best for a long neck and a small to medium bust; broad shoulders should leave it. Necklace: none, or a short pendant that stops above the line. Earrings do the work here: a refined drop. Hair up or a short bob.

The Eva top in scarlet red is a boat neck with 3/4 dolman sleeves that tucks into a high waisted pant; the same top comes in taupe. For evening, the Greta long dress has a boat neck bodice of turquoise sequins with cap sleeves over a black floor length skirt.

The cowl and the draped neck
A cowl drapes fabric in soft folds at the chest. It softens an angular face, gives a small bust presence, and is the kindest neckline over a chest that has started to show texture, because it moves and catches no single line. A full bust should choose a shallow cowl. Necklace: skip it; the folds are the ornament. Earrings small, hair simple.

The Amanda is a floral cowl neck midi, sleeveless, with a belt, and it is the garden wedding dress for a woman who does not want a V. Under a blazer, the Lucy draped blouse in ivory is the cowl with long sleeves.
The off shoulder
An off shoulder neckline is a strong horizontal that exposes the collarbones and the top of the shoulders. It widens narrow shoulders, balances full hips, and lengthens a short neck, and it belongs to the evening, never the boardroom. Broad shoulders should choose a V. Past 40 the question is not age but the skin at the shoulder; if it is even, wear it, and choose a fabric with weight so the line stays put. Necklace: a choker on skin or none; earrings carry the face. Hair up or swept to 1 side; the more shoulder you show, the more structured the hair.

The Iris off shoulder cocktail dress in black is ruched through the body and cut to the knee; the ruching forgives what a plain sheath would not. The Greta in navy takes the off shoulder to a wedding with buttons, a wide belt, pockets, and an A line midi skirt. For black tie, the Iris gown in navy and the Alis in bordeaux carry the same line to the floor. Under a blazer at the office, the Donna top in scarlet red crosses over at the front with long sleeves.
The halter
A halter draws the eye to the shoulders and the upper back and narrows the shoulder line by cutting in at the neck. It suits toned shoulders and arms and a moderate bust. No necklace; the strap is the line. Hair up, always.

The Melissa is a white polka dot dress with a halter strap, a fitted bodice, and a flared midi skirt, the summer wedding guest dress that photographs from every side.
The 1 shoulder and the asymmetric neck
A diagonal line across the chest lengthens and narrows at once, and it is the neckline for a woman who wants the evening to notice her without showing much skin. It suits most face shapes and balances broad shoulders better than an off shoulder does. Necklace: none; 1 earring can be heavier than the other. Hair swept to the covered side.

The Morgan is a black knee dress with an asymmetric neckline and ruching through the body. The Laura is the 1 shoulder version in bronze metallic, ruched, above the knee, for a 50th birthday.

The illusion neckline
A sheer yoke gives the effect of an open neckline with the coverage of a high one. It is the neckline mothers of the bride ask for most, because it is modest without being matronly, and it is the answer to a chest you would rather not spotlight. Necklace: none, a chain across sheer fabric looks wrong; earrings with polish. Hair up or in controlled waves.

The Jody lace cocktail dress in midnight green has an illusion round neck and short sleeves in lace, cut to the knee. The Lucy sheath in navy has a collar and sheer illusion sleeves, the version for a courtroom or a keynote. The Aria jumpsuit carries an illusion yoke over a belted wide leg.
The collar, the bow, and the lapel
A shirt collar frames the face and, worn open 1 or 2 buttons, makes a soft V; it is the boardroom and camera neckline for every bust size as long as the darts are right. A bow neck is a collar for a woman with a small bust and a long neck, and it softens a strong jaw. A blazer lapel is a V by another name: the notched lapel opens the chest, and the depth of the V is set by where the button sits, which should be below the fullest point of the bust.

The Emilia is an ivory bow tie blouse with long sleeves. The Agatha blazer in ivory has a notched lapel and a single button that sits at the waist, the V that frames a cowl top or a plain shell beneath it.
Face shape, fourth
Once the neck, the shoulders, and the bust have narrowed the field, the face settles it. A round face takes a V. A long face takes a round neck, a boat, or a higher square. A square face takes a scoop, a cowl, or a soft sweetheart. A heart shaped face takes a sweetheart, a scoop, or a V. An oval face can wear any of them, so it should choose on the 3 lines above. Glasses count too: bold frames want a clean neckline and almost no jewelry; fine frames can take a cowl and a strong earring.
Past 50, the texture question
The skin between the collarbone and the bust changes before the face does. That is not a reason to close the neckline; it is a reason to choose it. A soft V or a scoop that starts 2 fingers below the collarbone opens the neck without spotlighting the chest. A boat neck shows the collarbones and hides the rest. A cowl and an illusion yoke move or veil what a plain deep V would show. A tight turtleneck shortens the neck and weights the chin; a mock neck in a fine fabric, worn with an open jacket, does not. And a scarf in silk and viscose at the collar solves more than any neckline can.

The neckline, inch by inch: what each inch shows
Put a finger on the notch between your collarbones. Every neckline is measured down from there, and every inch changes what the room sees.
0 inches, the crew. Covers the collarbones and the throat. Shows the neck only. Right on a long neck and a small bust; on a short neck it takes 1 inch off, on a full bust it turns the chest into a block. A crew that sits 1/2 inch lower, a skimming round neck, gives the collarbone back and is the version to buy after 50. Under a blazer, it is the cleanest line there is.
1 to 2 inches, the scoop and the soft round. Shows the collarbones and the top of the breastbone; covers everything below. The daytime neckline for every neck, and the one that lets a short pendant sit on skin. A scoop wider than the collarbones reads as a boat; a scoop narrower than 6 inches across reads as a round.
2 fingers, about 1.5 inches: the depth most of our necklines are cut to. Open enough to lengthen the neck and break a full bust, closed enough that nothing catches the light when you lean across a table.
3 to 4 inches, the day V and the wrap. Shows the collarbones, the breastbone, and the start of the shadow between the breasts, not the breasts. Covers the bust. The bra test: lean forward as you would to sign something, and the neckline must stay 1 inch above the center of the bra. This is the depth for the office, a client dinner, a wedding, a memorial with a collar.
5 to 6 inches, the evening V. Shows the inner curve of the bust. Covers the cups. The depth for a dinner and a gala, and a depth that needs a bra cut for it, a plunge or a convertible with a low center, because a standard center panel will show. Past 40, ask whether the chest has texture that catches light; if so, a 4 inch V with a drape or a lace edge does the same work more kindly than a 6 inch V in a flat cloth.
Across, not down: the width. A neckline that ends 1 inch inside the shoulder point, the boat, the wide square, the wide scoop, widens the shoulders and needs a bra with the straps set wide or a strapless. A neckline 2 inches inside the shoulder point covers a normal strap. A neckline 3 inches inside, a narrow V or a crew, narrows the shoulders and covers every bra.
Below the shoulder: the off shoulder. Sits 2 to 3 inches below the shoulder point and shows the shoulders, the collarbone, and the upper back. Strapless bra, or a convertible with a low back. Raise both arms before you buy; if the neckline slides more than 1 inch, it is a size too big, and no amount of tape will hold it through a dinner.
The collar stand. A shirt collar with a 1 inch stand lifts the jaw and is the friend of a short neck when worn open by 2 buttons; the same collar buttoned to the top shortens the neck by that inch. A mock neck of 1.5 inches is kinder than a turtleneck of 3 inches on a short neck or a soft jaw, and a turtleneck of 3 inches is the winter neckline of a long neck.
Gaping. A woven neckline that gapes when you lean has a bust too full for the size or a shoulder too narrow for it. A tailor can take a 1/2 inch dart at the neckline for $15 to $35, and that is all; more than 1/2 inch and the size is wrong. On a wrap, the cure is a snap set 1 inch inside the overlap.
The necklace, in inches. 16 inches sits at the base of the throat and belongs to a crew, a boat, and a square. 18 inches sits at the collarbone and belongs to a scoop and a shallow V. 20 to 24 inches falls into a V and repeats its line; the pendant should stop 1 inch above where the neckline ends. With a cowl, a halter, an off shoulder, and an illusion yoke, no necklace at all; earrings do the work.
The questions women ask before they invest
Most flattering neckline for a work dress with a larger bust? A V or a wrap 3 to 4 inches deep with a collar or a lapel to frame it, or a soft square. Not a crew, not a boat with embellishment, not a high gathered neck. The Olga wrap and the Barbara wrap shirt are the Luna answers.
V neck or crew neck under a blazer? A V repeats the lapel and lengthens the neck; a skimming round neck is cleaner on a long neck with a small bust. Under a double breasted blazer, which is already 2 rows of lines, wear a plain round or a shallow V and no necklace.
Are square necks appropriate for the office? Yes, at 1 to 2 inches deep with a sleeve. The Rina square neck midi is the office square. A square with spaghetti straps is an evening.
Short neck and broad shoulders: which neckline? A narrow V, 3 to 4 inches deep, or a wrap. Both open the throat and draw a vertical line through the shoulders. Nothing horizontal, and no turtleneck.
How low can a V be on a work dress? 4 inches from the notch of the collarbone, and it must pass the lean forward test 1 inch above the bra. Past that depth it is a dinner dress.
Is a boat neck good under a tailored jacket? Yes if the shoulders are narrow or average; it fills the space between the lapels. On broad shoulders it widens what the jacket already squares.
Mock neck or turtleneck over 50? A 1.5 inch mock neck. It covers the throat, keeps the jaw clear, and goes under a lapel without bulk.
Can I wear a halter under a blazer for a work event? A halter with a high neck, yes, as the Melissa polka dot halter under a cropped blazer; a deep halter, no. Take the blazer off and it is the evening.
Which neckline photographs best? A V or a soft scoop with the collarbones showing, because the camera reads the diagonal as length. A crew on camera shortens the neck by an inch; a boat squares the frame. For a headshot, a collar open by 2 buttons or a shallow V, and 1 small earring.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most flattering neckline for a large bust? A V, a wrap, or a soft square that starts about 2 fingers below the collarbone. They break the chest into 2 vertical halves and lengthen the neck. A tight crew, a boat with embellishment, or a high gathered neck turns the chest into 1 block.
Which neckline makes a short neck look longer? A V, a soft scoop, a wrap, or a shirt collar worn open, all starting at or below the collarbone. Avoid a tight crew, a mock neck, and a heavy turtleneck; they close the space between chin and chest.
Can I wear an off shoulder dress over 50? Yes, if the skin at the shoulder is even and the dress has enough weight to hold the line. The off shoulder belongs to the evening; for a daytime event with the same openness, a boat neck shows the collarbones and covers the rest.
What necklace goes with a V neck dress? A princess length, 16 to 18 inches, with a pendant or a Y shape that follows the V. Keep the earrings small when the necklace has a pendant, or wear drops and no necklace at all.
Which neckline for a mother of the bride? An illusion neckline, a boat neck, a soft V, a square with coverage, or a wrap. They cover the neck and chest while reading formal, and they photograph. A halter or a deep V belongs to the guests.
Which neckline for a round face? A V or a wrap, which adds length. A long face takes the opposite: a round neck, a boat, or a higher square. Decide the neck, shoulders, and bust first; the face settles ties.
